Coatings containing particulate metal alloy are disclosed. The coatings provide corrosion protection to a substrate, such as a metal substrate. The coatings contain zinc-metal-containing alloy in flake form, most particularly an alloy flake of zinc and aluminum. The coating can be from compositions that are water-based or solvent-based. The compositions for providing the coating may also contain a substituent such as a water-reducible organofunctional silane, or a hexavalent-chromium-providing substance, or a titanate polymer, or a silica substance constituent. the coating may desirably be topcoated.

Particulate metal alloy coating for providing corrosion protection

Methods and compositions that serve to both darken a zinc or other active! metal surface and impart corrosion-resistant properties thereto, are disclosed. The compositions include an aqueous solution containing about 0.1 percent to about 5 percent ammonium chloride and about 0.1 percent to about 5 percent ammonium molybdate. The compositions utilize particular ratios of concentrations of ammonium chloride and ammonium molybdate.

Compositions and methods for darkening and imparting corrosion-resistant properties to zinc or other active metals

Coatings containing particulate metal alloy are disclosed. The coatings provide corrosion protection to a substrate, such as a metal substrate. The coatings contain zinc-metal-containing alloy in flake form, most particularly an alloy flake of zinc and aluminum. The coating can be from compositions that are water-based or solvent-based. The compositions for providing the coating may also contain a substituent such as a water-reducible organofunctional silane, or a hexavalent-chromium-providing substance, or a titanate polymer, or a silica substance constituent. The coating may desirably be topcoated.

There is disclosed a water-reducible, chrome-free coating composition for providing corrosion protection to a substrate, such as a metal substrate. The deposited coating film is corrosion-resistant and, for coated articles which are threaded, e.g., steel fasteners, the coating provides a non-thread-filling coating. The coating composition contains particulate metal, such as particulate zinc or aluminum. Although substituents can be separately packaged, the composition is virtually always a one-package coating composition. The composition is water-based, while also containing low-boiling organic liquid. The composition also contains water-reducible organofunctional silane, particularly an epoxy functional silane, as a binding agent. The composition has highly desirable, extended shelf life. The composition can be easily applied in usual manner, such as dip-drain or dip-spin technique, and readily cures at elevated temperature.

Water-reducible coating composition for providing corrosion protection

There is disclosed a water-reducible, chromium-free coating composition for providing corrosion protection to a substrate, such as a metal substrate. The deposited coating film is corrosion-resistant and for coated articles which are threaded, e.g., steel fasteners, the coating provides a non-thread-filling coating. The coating composition contains particulate metal, such as particulate zinc or aluminum. Although substituents can be separately packaged, the composition is virtually always a one-package coating composition. The composition contains water-reducible organofunctional silane, particularly an epoxy functional silane, as a binding agent. The composition has highly desirable, extended shelf life. The composition can be easily applied in the usual manner, such as dip-drain or dip-spin technique, and readily cures at elevated temperature.

The present invention relates particularly to a one-package, black-pigmented, corrosion resistant coating composition, of excellent storage stability and being especially suitable for application over metal that has been coated with a composition containing chromium in non-elemental form. More specifically, the coating composition of the invention is formulated from an intimate blend of aqueous carbon black colloidal dispersion in aqueous medium, which is in further mixture with thickening agent aqueous acrylic resin dispersion and silica sol having a pH of not above about 10.

A coating composition is now provided which can have a great number of desirable coating characteristics, when the composition is applied and cured on a metal substrate. Moreover, the coating composition has applicability to a great variety of metal substrates. Such substrates include base metal such as steel as well as metal coated substrates such as zinc electroplated steel. Furthermore, the coating compositions can be useful when applied to substrates sensitive to elevated cure temperature, e.g., annealed steel. In one important aspect the composition can contain hexavalent-chromium-providing substance in mixture with cobalt compound. Particulate metal may be present in the composition. A composition furthermore most desirably contains a special organic acid/alcohol reducing agent combination for the hexavalent chromium. The composition can provide a low-cure coating on a metal substrate, which can then translate into higher production line speeds as when used for coating of metal coils.

An anodic belt electroplating apparatus utilizes a flexible, electrolyte permeable belt anode with porous outer belt covering that provides flexible operation parameters. The perforate belt anode such as of valve metal in mesh form, has an electrocatalytic coating and an electrolyte-containing wrap for the outer belt covering. Processing parameters can provide desirable electroplate, such as of metal coils electroplated in strip form through an at least substantially flat and horizontal electroplate zone, at highly desirable plating speeds as well as providing careful control over plate composition and deposition thickness.

Application of electroplate to moving metal by belt plating

An anodic roller electroplating process utilizes novel anodic roller apparatus and provides flexible operation parameters. The novel anodic roller apparatus comprises a perforate valve metal cylinder such as in mesh form. The cylinder has an electrocatalytic coating and an electrolyte-containing, porous wrap. Processing parameters can provide desirable electroplate, such as of metal coils, at enhanced plating speeds as well as providing carefull control over plate composition and deposition thickness.

Temperature resistant substrates, and particularly metals such as ferrous metals, coated for corrosion resistance with coatings containing particulate metal and hexavalent chromium-providing substance can now be made further corrosion resistant, as well as having excellent heat resistance, with a coating composite. In the composite, the undercoating contains a boric acid component plus substantial amounts of finely-divided aluminum as particulate metal. As an adjacent top layer, a coating containing silica substance is used.
