Apparatus and methods for efficient expression of breast milk is provided. The device comprises a horn having a funnel for receiving a breast and a tube extending downwards from the funnel and removably connected to a first end of a main body. The main body has a stem extending downwards from a second end. The horn portion of the device can vary in size depending on the user need to accommodate varying sizes. A flexible cylindrical diaphragm and a valve is provided and are configured to engage and create a sealing between the lower portion of the main body and a container for receiving the breast milk. The use of the cylindrical diaphragm creates minor stress points along the surface of the diaphragm, thereby making it difficult to tear or damage during repeated operation and cleaning. The device further comprises a cap having a port in communication with a pressure source and configured to engage with a container for receiving breast milk, the container further configured to removably connect with the lower second end of the main body. During the milking operation, a negative pressure from the pressure source is communicated through the port to the device in order to create a suction on the funnel for extracting the milk from the breast. In response to the negative pressure, the diaphragm moves from a first state to a second distended state and the valve circumferentially engages and seals around the stem of the main body to provide an airtight seal during the milking operation. Once the negative pressure is released the diaphragm returns back to the first state allowing the milk to freely flow from the horn, through the main body and into the container.

One embodiment relates to a pressure sensor apparatus, including a housing with a flexible member and an aperture configured to receive a fluid. The pressure sensor apparatus further includes a first member disposed on the flexible member, a second member removably coupled to the first member configured to move in response to a pressure of the fluid and a sensor configured to detect the movement of the second member. The pressure sensor apparatus generates a pressure signal for the fluid based on the displacement of the second member.

A sheeting is provided for use with a fluid processing cassette having a valve station with a plurality of fluid flow ports. The sheeting has a generally flexible layer and a biasing member associated with the layer. The sheeting is attached to the cassette such that the biasing member is received within the valve station. The cassette may be used with a fluid processing system having a valve actuator with a piston that is aligned with the cassette during use. In an extended position, the piston presses the sheeting against the port to prevent fluid flow through the valve station. When the piston moves from the extended position to a retracted position, it allows the sheeting to uncover the port, thereby allowing fluid flow through the valve station. The biasing member assists in displacing the sheeting from the port when the piston moves to the retracted position.

An electrical breast pump may include a permanently unobstructed continuous passageway across the diaphragm and a rolling diaphragm that is movable between a vent orientation and a vacuum orientation, or a vent piston configured to actuate a closure between a vent orientation and a vacuum orientation so that a pressure chamber is selectively in direct communication with atmospheric pressure.

An umbilicus is provided for use in an umbilicus-driven fluid processing system. The umbilicus is free of a drive shaft and includes an umbilicus body having enlarged first and second ends, with an intermediate section located therebetween. At least one fluid-transmitting lumen extends between the first and second ends. The umbilicus further includes first and second end fittings, each associated with one of the ends of the umbilicus body. Each end fitting defines an interior cavity having a flared portion, with at least a portion of one of the enlarged ends of the umbilicus body being seated within the flared portion. The enlarged ends of the umbilicus body may be formed using a heated die at least partially inserted into the fluid-transmitting lumen.

A pressure sensor has a housing, a movable member and a vision sensor. The housing has an aperture configured to receive a fluid. The movable member is disposed in the housing and configured to move in response to a pressure of the fluid. The vision sensor is configured to detect the movement of the movable member.

The first part comprises a label having a plurality of discrete magnetic portions arranged in a predetermined pattern unique to the first part, and the second part comprises a magnetic reader for identifying the magnetic pattern on the first part and generating a signal indicative of the pattern.
