Labeling machine for applying labels of heat softenable material to containers comprising a rotating cylindrical vacuum drum which picks up labels in succession at a label receiving station as it rotates, transports each label to a label applying station at which the leading end of each label is applied to a container; means to rotate each container to which the leading end of a label has been applied to wrap the label around the container and to lap the trailing end of the label over the leading end and while so doing to apply pressure to the lapped junction of the leading and trailing ends, and means in the form of a heat applicator located within the drum, extensible through an opening in the drum to bring a head or nozzle into close proximity to the trailing end of a label during most of the travel of such trailing end between the label receiving and label applying positions and to apply heat during such period to the trailing end to soften the trailing end so that it can be welded by pressure to the leading end.

Method and apparatus for heat sealing labels on containers

Apparatus for heat sealing labels on containers

A mixing valve is provided for mixing together two liquids in varying proportions and has the capability of being joined in series to other mixing valves, each of which, other than the first of the series, receives water from its adjacent valve.

Labeling machine of the stack fed type in which the labels are precut and arranged vertically in a horizontal stack. Pressure is applied to the rear of the stack to move the stack forwardly as the labels are dispensed to a label transfer mechanism such as a vacuum drum. Air is blown into the stack from the bottom at the forward end of the stack to separate the foremost label, which is picked up from the stack by a rotating vacuum wheel.

Stack fed labeling machine

A vacuum drum for carrying a label held to its surface by vacuum past an adhesive applying roll to a position where the label will touch a container and the container will be rolled along the drum surface to thereby apply the label about the container. The drum is provided with a circumferential series of vacuum ports that extend through its outer surface. The vacuum to the ports is fed through passages in a bottom support plate for the drum and the passages all communicate with a stationary vacuum chamber in a collector ring which is held against the inner surface of the drum supporting plate. The collector ring vacuum chamber extends about the axis of the ring for about 180.degree. and at one end thereof serves to close off the passages to the drum in radial succession as the label is transferred to the container. Each passage, after being shut off from the vacuum, is vented. The passages which connect to the label leading edge vacuum ports are connected to an air pressure chamber in the collector ring immediately after being cut off from vacuum to assist in the transfer of the leading edge of the label to the container.

Hot runner injection molding apparatus for coinjecting two thermoplastic materials sequentially through separate channels to form at least a two-layer sandwich material is provided. There is a valve means for instantaneously switching the flow of thermoplastic material from one channel to the other channel, the valve means preferably comprising a shuttle ball member.

Method and apparatus for coinjecting two thermoplastic materials

An apparatus for forming a smooth, even, substantially encapsulating layer of a heat shrinkable polyolefin plastic on a glass container. The body of the container is substantially greater in diameter compared with the neck. A cylindrical sleeve of polyolefin is telescopically placed along the outer surface of the container and the two are conveyed together into a heating oven for shrinking the sleeve snugly over the container. During heating, the polyolefin initially softens and becomes limp such that the sleeve tends to fold over or upon shrinking creates wavy top margins on the shrunken covering. The apparatus provides controlled rotation of the bottle and sleeve in the oven to apply a centrifugal force to the limp plastic which remains erect and billowed outwardly to give the material time to react with the heat such that the sleeve material shrinks into overall even, snug contact about the contour of the container without folds and wrinkles. By way of example, using 14-15 mil foam polyethylene sleeve on the order of 4-5 inch diameter over a bottle having a body diameter 4-5 inch and neck diameter 1-2 inch, the foam being pre-oriented in machine direction (sleeve circumference) 60- 80% and cross dimension 0-15% is subjected to a bottle rotation in the range of 150-300 RPM while immersed in the oven heated by hot air at a ware production rate (speed) of 100-250 BPM.

Apparatus controlling shrinkage of a sleeve wrap on a container

A method of forming a substantially encapsulating layer of a heat shrinkable polyolefin plastic on a glass container in which the neck, shoulder and body onto the bearing bottom surface of the container is covered. The body of the container is substantially greater in diameter compared with the neck. A cylindrical sleeve of the polyolefin is telescopically placed along the outer surface of the container and the two are conveyed together into a heating oven for shrinking the sleeve snugly over the container. Upon application of heat in the oven, the polyolefin initially softens and becomes limp such that the sleeve tends to fold over or upon shrinking creates wavy top margins on the shrunken covering. The invention includes controlled rotation of the bottle and sleeve in the oven to apply a centrifugal force to the limp plastic which remains erect and billowed outwardly to give the material time to react with the heat such that the sleeve material shrinks into overall even, snug contact about the contour of the container without folds and wrinkles. By way of example, heat shrinkable foam polyethylene sleeve material on the order of 4-5 inch diameter sleeve (bottle body diameter 4-5 inch and neck diameter 1-2 inch) and 14-15 mil thickness which is pre-oriented in machine direction (sleeve circumference) 60-80% and cross dimension 0-15% shrinks evenly and suitably onto the neck with good upper marginal control at a bottle rotation in the range of 150-300 RPM while immersed in the heat atmosphere of the oven at a production rate of approximately 100-250 BPM.
