A paper mat is made from an aqueous slurry or dispersion of kraft wood pulp, a large amount of finely divided inorganic pigments and as a binder an anionic latex of a copolymer of at least one conjugated diene monomer, at least one vinyl substituted aromatic monomer, at least one acrylic-type monomer and at least one monomer having a vinyl group and an activatable methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl ester group. The mat of this invention exhibits improved properties over mats made from other latex binders.

A paper felt or mat is made from an aqueous slurry or dispersion of kraft wood pulp, a number of compounding ingredients such as finely divided inorganic pigments and fillers, a binder, an anionic latex of a copolymer wherein the core of the copolymer comprises a copolymer of a vinyl aryl monomer and a dicarboxylic acid monomer such as fumaric acid and/or itaconic acid and wherein the shell comprises a copolymer or a vinyl aryl monomer, a conjugated diene monomer, a glycidyl monomer such as glycidyl acrylate and/or glycidyl methacrylate and optionally a monocarboxylic acid monomer such as acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid. The mat of this invention exhibits improved properties over mats made from other latex binders.

Paper felts or mats

Asphalt cement compositions are disclosed which utilize petroleum asphalt, natural asphalt, a reactive oil and an elastomer. These compositions produce a superior asphalt cement that can give low viscosity during application followed by high viscosity, toughness and tenacity after curing on the highway.

A latex copolymer composition is produced having good flame retardancy. The copolymer is typically made from vinylidene chloride monomers, conjugated diene monomers, vinyl substituted aromatic monomers, and functional monomers such as unsaturated mono or dicarboxylic acids. Through the use of flame retardant agents such as halogenated waxes, metallic salts, and the like, the pliability or softness, as well as the strength of the copolymer composition, can be controlled. Flexibilizing agents can optionally be utilized to abate cracking, especially after heat aging. The composition can optionally be pigmented. The flame retardant latex composition can be utilized as coatings on various substrates such as mats, fibers, and the like.

An aqueous alkaline dispersion of a rubbery graft low gel vinyl pyridine copolymer and a water soluble, heat reactive phenolic resin is useful in forming an adhesive for bonding polyamide or polyester reinforcing elements or cords to rubber compounds or stocks. After dipping the polyamide or polyester cord in the one-step adhesive dip, the coated cord is heated to dry it and heat cure or heat set the adhesive on the cord. Thereafter, the adhesive containing polyamide or polyester cord is combined with, or laminated to (calendered), a curable rubber compound and the resulting assembly is cured to form a composite in which the polyamide or polyester cord is bonded to the rubber by means of said adhesive.

Rubber compounds are readily bonded to tire cords using a dip process in which the dip contains an alkaline aqueous dispersion of a mixture of a major amount by weight of a rubbery vinyl pyridine/styrene/butadiene copolymer and a minor amount of a lignin amine-resorcinol-formaldehyde reaction product.

Rubber compounds are readily bonded to tire cords using a dip process in which the dip contains an alkaline aqueous dispersion of a mixture of a major amount by weight of a rubbery carboxylated conjugated diene copolymer and a minor amount of a lignin amine formaldehyde reaction product.

In the aqueous emulsion free radical polymerization of dienes and copolymerization of dienes and vinyl monomers using mercaptan modifiers there is added at at least 75% conversion a large amount of mercaptan modifier as compared to that previously added and the polymerization is stopped at about 90-99+% conversion to provide processable polymers having a reduced amount of or no gel.

Aqueous free radical emulsion polymerization

A method of producing a polymeric material comprised of polymerizing at least one unsaturated organic compound in an aqueous emulsion in the presence of a free radical generating redox catalyst comprised of a reducing component and an oxidizing component. Said oxidizing component is a composite prepared by (A) obtaining the oxidation product of reacting p-diisopropylbenzene with oxygen and (B) removing a major portion of resulting p-diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide and unreacted monomers therefrom to effect a concentration of the remainder of the byproducts therein.
