An apparatus includes a focusing lens, a SLM optically coupled to the focusing lens and comprising micromirrors on a surface of the SLM, where the focusing lens is tilted at an incident angle relative to the surface of the SLM, an incident light beam is illuminated on the SLM at the incident angle, and the incident angle is greater by an offset angle than twice a tilt angle of the micromirrors with respect to the surface of the SLM. The apparatus also includes an actuator optically coupled to the SLM, and projection optics optically coupled to the actuator.

Optically reduced display pixel fill factor for increased display resolution

A method of aligning optical signals in a fiber optic switching device with one or two phase light modulators (PLMs) includes configuring the phase elements of the PLMs with first initial settings, to direct an optical signal from an input fiber to an output fiber. An initial position displacement of a center of the signal image from a center of the output fiber is estimated. Corrected settings for the phase elements are calculated so that when the corrected settings are applied to the phase elements, a corrected signal image of the optical signal has a corrected position displacement from the center of the output fiber that is less than the initial position displacement. A fiber optic switching device has processing circuitry and a memory component configured to execute steps of the method of aligning the optical signals.

An apparatus includes a spatial light modulator (SLM) having a first region and a second region and a phase light modulator (PLM) optically coupled to the SLM. The PLM is configured to receive first light having a first color and receive second light having a second color, the second color different than the first color. The PLM is also configured to direct the first light towards the first region of the SLM and direct the second light towards the second region of the SLM.

In described examples of a system for outputting a patterned light beam, the system includes: an illumination source; a positive optical element positioned to receive light from the illumination source and to output converging light; a reflective element positioned to receive the converging light from the positive optical element, the reflective element configured to reflect the converging light to form a scan beam; and a negative optical element to receive the scan beam from the reflective element, the negative optical element configured to output the scan beam to a field of view.

An optical distance measuring system includes a first transmitter, a first solid state device, and a receiver. The first transmitter is configured to generate a first optical waveform. The first solid state device is configured to receive the first optical waveform and steer the first optical waveform toward a target object. The receiver is configured to receive the first optical waveform reflected off of the first target object and determine a distance to the first target object based on a time of flight from the transmitter to the first target object and back to the receiver.

The apparatus has a platform suspended above the driving electrode and conductively coupled to a platform electrode, where the platform is configured to move in a direction perpendicular to a surface of the substrate in response to a voltage difference applied between the driving electrode and the platform electrode. The apparatus also has a mirror post on the platform. The apparatus has a mirror coupled to the platform by the mirror post, where the mirror is rectangular.

A digital micromirror device comprises an array of micromirror pixels, the array comprising a first micromirror pixel and a second micromirror pixel. The first micromirror pixel comprises a hinge, where the hinge is configured to tilt toward a first raised address electrode and toward a second raised address electrode. The first micromirror pixel also comprises a first micromirror coupled to the hinge, where the first micromirror has a sculpted edge. The second micromirror pixel comprises a second micromirror, where a first gap between a first point on the sculpted edge and a nearest point to the first point on the second micromirror is larger than a second gap between a second point on the sculpted edge and a nearest point to the second point on the second micromirror.

A display device includes laser light sources configured to emit respective light beams at respective wavelengths for respective color modes, a PLM configured to reflect and scroll the light beams on a projection surface, and lenses configured to project the light beams from the laser light sources onto respective nonoverlapping areas on the PLM.

Described examples include a display having a first light source configured to provide a first light and a second light source configured to provide a second light. The display also having a spatial light modulator configured to produce a first modulated light by modulating the first light and configured to produce a second modulated light by modulating the second light. The display also having a first diffractive optical element configured to receive the first modulated light and configured to provide a first image having a first characteristic to display optics; and a second diffractive optical element configured to receive the second modulated light and configured to provide a second image having a second characteristic to the display optics.

Described examples include an apparatus having a phase light modulator. The apparatus also has a first light source configured to direct a first light beam to the phase light modulator, the phase light modulator configured to provide a first modulated light beam directed to a first field of view. The apparatus also has a second light source configured to direct a second light beam to the phase light modulator, the phase light modulator configured to provide a second modulated light beam directed to a second field of view. The apparatus also has a first light detector configured to detect the first modulated light beam as reflected from the first field of view; and a second light detector configured to detect the second modulated light beam as reflected from the second field of view.

In described examples, a system (e.g., a projection system) can include a diffractive optical element adapted to be illuminated by at least one coherent light beam. A lens array is coupled to receive a diffracted beam of light from the diffractive optical element. The lens array includes a first and a second array lens. The first array lens is coupled to receive a first sector of a pattern of illumination of the diffracted beam of light, and the second array lens is coupled to receive a second sector of the pattern of illumination of the diffracted beam of light. A spatial light modulator is coupled to receive overlapping diffracted beams of light from the first and second array lenses to form an image beam.

In described examples, a body includes an opening in a central portion of a surface, a cavity having sides extending from the opening into the body, and a bottom surface within the body supporting a phosphor configured to emit light when energized by incoming light. In a further arrangement, the sides are tapered from the opening to the bottom surface, such that a cross sectional area of the opening is greater than a cross sectional area of the bottom surface.

A spatial light modulator (SLM) has an array of pixels configured to modulate light in patterns responsive to first control signals. The modulated light forms at least one patterned light beam in a field of view. An illumination source is optically coupled to the SLM. The illumination source is configured to illuminate the array of pixels, responsive to second control signals. Circuitry is coupled to the SLM and to the illumination source. The circuitry is configured to provide the first control signals to the SLM and the second control signals to the illumination source. At least one detector is configured to detect a reflection of the patterned light beam in the field of view.
