A printing system for printing documents that includes a recurring image. The printing system includes a computer connected to a printer over a communication link. The computer generates a named sequence to represent the recurring image and a parameter. The parameter value provides the printer with information that can be used to optimize the processing and printing of the named sequence.

System for printing a document with recurring images

The method of the invention converts colors resident in a first device color space to gray levels for reproduction in a color or monochrome rendering device. The method initially converts the color values resident in the first device color space to corresponding color values in a device independent color space. Next, the resulting color values in the device independent color space are converted to further color values in the same color space that correspond to color values resident in the color space of a target color rendering device. The further color values from the device independent color space are then converted to corresponding gray levels so that they may be rendered by either the target color rendering device or a different color or monochrome rendering device. The use of an intermediate gamut conversion within the device independent color space enables more precise gray representations to be achieved for certain color representations.

Method for determining gray values in a printer

A PostScript-compatible printer accepts PostScript language commands that indicate both device-dependent and device-independent color specifications. Such a printer in accordance with the invention has a PostScript interpreter that implements Level 1 and Level 2 color rendering pipelines. In the Level 1 color rendering pipeline, the interpreter converts device-dependent color specifications to internal color specifications using a calibrated n-dimensional operation. In the Level 2 color rendering pipeline, the interpreter converts device-independent color specifications to device-dependent color specifications using a standard PostScript color rendering dictionary, and then passes such device-dependent color specifications into the Level 1 pipeline for further processing.
