A suspended drive axle and agricultural tractor having same including a central housing having inboard final drives and left and right axle housing suspended therefrom by upper and lower control arms with axle shafts extending outwardly therefrom to which wheel and tire assemblies are mounted. A constant velocity universal joint is provided between the inboard final drives and the axle shafts. The universal joint having a pair of journal members and a coupling yoke that radially surround the drive and driven yokes of the joint whereby the axial length of the universal joint is minimized to enable the wheels to be located on the axle shafts at 60 inch tread spacing. This allows the drive axle to be used on a row crop tractor without altering the structure of the vehicle from a conventional row crop tractor whereby the characteristics of a row crop tractor are maintained.

A work vehicle configuration has the engine directly over the front axle, the cooling system radiator far enough forward to allow even large tires to turn into the volume defined between the radiator and the engine, and a tall but very narrow transmission forward of the operator enclosure. This allows the vehicle to be provided with a wasp-waist, significantly improving visibility. This also allows a recessed area in the vehicle body adjacent to the front tires, allowing a sharper turning radius and improved maneuverability. This placement of the transmission frees space under the operator enclosure, allowing use of a significantly larger fuel tank. Finally, the placement of the main vehicle components away from the front tires and out from under the operator enclosure allows improved access and serviceability for the tractor.

A suspended operator station within the cab of a tractor or similar vehicle adjusts the height of the seat and thereafter the positions of the steering wheel, foot pedals and other controls relative to the seat for maximum visibility and comfort of operators of different size, and permits attenuated movement of the seat and controls together. The seat is mounted on a platform which is suspended above the cab floor by an attenuator assembly permitting limited, attenuated movement of the platform in a generally horizontal plane and a height adjustable support having vertical shock absorption and which positions the height of the seat for optimum visibility. The seat is mounted on the platform via tracks which permit fore-aft adjustment of the seat relative to controls coupled to the platform. In one embodiment a tiltable and telescoping steering wheel and foot pedals are mounted on a subfloor which is coupled to and adjustable in height relative to the platform. In an alternative embodiment the foot pedals are mounted on the platform and a tiltable and telescoping steering wheel is mounted on a console extending from the armrest of the seat.

A vehicle roll-over protective structure includes four Y-shaped metal plates, formed to generally tripodal configurations, and welded at two legs of the three legs to the legs of two other similar tripodal plates to form an open bottom, box-like framework. The framework is fastened by its unwelded legs to a vehicle chassis which closes the bottom of the framework to form the roll-over protective structure.

A process for making composite articles, such as upholstery, filled with a cellular polyurethane foam covered by a breathable, porous fabric includes coating one surface of the fabric and the pores therein with a strippable coating. The fabric is then placed in a mold with the coating against the inside of the mold and is pulled down into conformity with the mold by vacuum. A liquid polyurethane foam resin is poured in place behind the fabric and foamed to a flexible solid state. The article is removed from the mold and the coating is stripped to complete the process.
