A system and method for fluidly sealing a cylinder head interface between an engine block and a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine. An example apparatus includes a perimeter seal disposed on an outer periphery of the cylinder head. The perimeter seal has a first surface to abut a cylinder head sealing surface and a second surface to abut an engine block sealing surface. The perimeter seal is configured to prevent fluid from an external environment from entering the cylinder head interface and to allow fluid within the cylinder head interface to vent to the external environment when the fluid is above a predetermined pressure. A first fluid transfer tube seal fluidly seals a first fluid transfer orifice extending between the engine block and the cylinder head. The perimeter seal and the first fluid transfer tube seal are formed as a unitary structure.

A pin comprising a conical body having a central axis and a cross-sectional area that decreases with distance from a first end to a second end. A coating applied to the conical body has a melting temperature that is lower than a melting temperature of the conical body. The coating melting temperature is lower than a friction temperature and the body melting temperature is higher than the friction temperature. The friction temperature is achieved at an interface of the pin and a component when the pin is forcibly positioned into the component to repair a defect. The coating comprises a material having a first tensile strength value of a bond formed between the conical body and the component in response to softening and rehardening of the coating.

An injector bore insert includes a proximate portion adjacent to a combustion face and a distal portion including an upper threaded outer diameter. The injector bore insert further includes an angled conical collar, a remote threaded portion along an upper bore portion, a circumferential slot extending distally from approximately the combustion face, and one or more sealing regions. Each sealing region is positioned on the injector bore insert to facilitate sealing between the injector bore insert and a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine.

A method for repairing a multi-valve cylinder head, having a fuel injector or spark plug, or pre-chamber opening near the valve openings, that provides an insert with structural integrity that is capable of providing for both a repair for the crack and injector sleeve functionality in the finish-machined cylinder head. The present invention overcomes the consequences and structural limitations typically confronting larger diameter configurations while providing for a reliable sealing approach.

Methods, systems, and apparatuses for driveline load management

A unitary combustion deck for an internal combustion engine includes a main body portion having a cylinder-facing surface and a coolant-side facing surface. The combustion deck further includes a plurality of bolt bosses which are integrally cast as part of the coolant-side surface and each bolt boss defines a bolt-receiving aperture which extends through the main body portion and which is designed to receive a mounting bolt for securing the combustion deck to a cylinder block for sealing against the leakage of combustion gases. Further included as part of the combustion deck is a load distribution rib which is constructed and arranged to extend in a ring-like form around the at least one cylinder while integrally connecting with each bolt boss of the plurality of bolt bosses.

An assembly including an engine component, such as a fuel injector, seated against a seating surface of a cylinder head is provided with a positive seal contact an uppermost point of contact between an injector sleeve and a seating surface of the cylinder head. The positive seal contact prevents coolant from the water jacket from travelling below the uppermost point of contact, thereby avoiding cavitation damage which might otherwise occur by the entrapment of liquid between the cylinder head seating surface and the injector sleeve. In an embodiment, a raised annular ridge is formed in the seating surface of the cylinder head at the location of the uppermost point of contact. This ridge becomes embedded in the injector sleeve. Also, in an embodiment, the cylinder head includes a circular recess upwardly from the uppermost point of contact. Although coolant from the water jacket can enter the recess, the recess radially separates the cylinder head from the injector sleeve by an amount that will not be closed under deflection due to cyclic loading on the injector.

An apparatus and method for altering the acoustic signature of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. Several techniques for altering the acoustic signature of an engine are shown, including time-varying, disabling or cutout of individual cylinders of an engine in a random fashion in order to reduce the periodic characteristics of the exhaust noise of the engine. Alternate embodiments include offsetting crank pins to transform an even firing engine into an uneven firing engine, inhibiting the fueling of individual cylinders, and inhibiting the ignition signals provided to individual cylinders. A combination of the above techniques may also be implemented in order to disperse the exhaust noise energy present over a wide frequency range, making acoustic detection of the exhaust signature difficult. Cylinder cutout schemes are implemented over a single or multiple engine cycle to disperse exhaust noise pulses over time and randomize measurable spectral noise composition.

Device and method for altering the acoustic signature of an internal

A cylinder block for an internal combustion engine is provided which includes a plurality of relatively spaced free-standing cylinder tubes disposed within a cooling jacket formed in the block. The cylinder tubes are connectedly supported by, and extend upwardly from, the floor section of the cooling jacket. The jacket floor section is reinforced by at least one elongated rib-like member which is integral with and depends from the underside of the floor section and is located between adjacent cylinder tubes. Each rib-like member substantially spans the distance between opposing walls that form, in part, the cooling jacket, and is remote from a cavity within the jacket through which a coolant is caused to circulate during operation of the engine. Bolt receiving means of the cylinder block are positioned so that, when restraining bolts are introduced and tightened to secure a cylinder head to the block, substantially uniform support of the cylinder tubes from their lower portion is achieved. Lateral movement of the upper ends of the cylinder tubes is restricted by struts extending radially from the cylinder tubes and connected to the walls of the cooling jacket.

Cylinder block for internal combustion engine

A cylinder block for an internal combustion engine is provided which includes a cooling jacket having a peripheral wall forming the exterior of the block and a plurality of cylinder tubes disposed within and encompassed by said wall. A plurality of depending openings or bores are formed in the top surface of the block to accommodate a corresponding number of bolts for assembling a cylinder head on the block top surface. Each opening is internally threaded; however, the threads within the openings commence at different levels relative to the block top surface. The level at which the threads commence will depend upon the location of the opening with respect to the cooling jacket peripheral wall. Thus, the greater the distance the opening is from the wall, the threads thereof will commence within the opening at a greater depth from the top surface of the block.

Cylinder block

A bottom stop liner for use in an engine block and head assembly including a radially directed surface adjacent the inner end of the liner for engaging a liner stop and a radial press fit at the outer end of the liner combined with a resilient liner body integral with and extending between the inner and outer ends operating to apply axial spring force between the liner stop and the head of the engine to place the portion of the head block surrounding a cylinder cavity in which the liner is placed under tensile force as the head is connected to the engine block and moved into operative position. The liner body is designed to have an axial compliance which is greater than the axial compliance of the surrounding portion of the engine block. The desired compliance characteristics are achieved by providing the liner body with an uniform minimal radial wall thickness along a substantial inner portion of the total axial length thereof and by providing a radial wall thickness which increases with increased axial distance from the inner end of the liner in proportion to the upper limit of gas pressure to which the interior of the cylinder liner is subjected only along a relatively smaller outer axial portion of the liner. The block walls surrounding each cylinder cavity are relatively uniform in radial thickness and the outer surfaces join tangentially to cause adjacent cylinder cavities to be separated by a distance equal to twice the cylinder wall thickness. Moreover, the end walls of the cylinder block and the liner support flanges are formed to maintain circumferentially uniform compliance in the liner supporting portion of the cylinder block. A head gasket having a high friction body for reducing wear and a combustion seal ring having a high non-resilient deformation characteristic is provided to complement the unique liner/block design.

An improved cylinder block for a high compression internal combustion engine is provided which includes a cooling jacket having interconnected peripheral side and end walls and a base section, and at least one cylinder tube disposed within and encompassed by the jacket wall. The tube extends upwardly from and is connected to the jacket base section. The upper end portion of the tube adjacent the top surface of the block is reinforced by a plurality of substantially radial supports extending from the tube exterior to the interior surface of the jacket wall. The supports provide substantial radial reinforcement as compared to vertical reinforcement of the tube, particularly in the area thereof which is subjected to the greatest pressure during operation of the engine.

Cylinder block for an internal combustion engine

A cylinder liner is disclosed for an internal combustion engine including a cylindrical hollow body having a press fitted upper end and a stop located intermediate the liner ends for engaging an engine block liner stop to provide upper and lower seals for a coolant passage. The outside surfaces of the liner adjacent the press fitted upper end and the stop are formed to permit a settable plastic material to be used between the liner and engine block to assist in forming the coolant seal and to provide radial support to the liner to permit the lower 30 percent of the cylinder liner to be free of any direct contact with the engine block. This design also permits use of a smaller capacity cooling system and improves lubricating oil flow within the engine block.

A composite engine block is disclosed including a main frame containing plural cylinder liner receiving cavities interleaved with plural cross walls extending generally perpendicularly between the outer side walls of the main frame and an oil pan adapter or ladder frame forming the lower section of the composite engine block between the main frame and the engine oil pan. Each main frame cross wall is combined with a pair of pillars extending between the upper head engaging surface of the main frame and a crankshaft bearing support located adjacent the lower surface of the engine block, wherein both the cross wall and pillars are shaped to strengthen and rigidify the composite engine block and to facilitate metal casting of the main frame. Size and weight reductions are realized by engine coolant flow paths within the main frame which bring coolant into contact with only the upper portion of each cylinder liner and lubrication flow paths in the main frame which cause the engine lubricant to return from the camshaft to the engine oil pan along a path which includes the space between the lower portions of the respective cylinder liners. Lubrication is supplied to corresponding main and camshaft bearings along single linear supply branches which intersect with a main lubrication rifle arranged parallel to and intermediate the rotational axes of the engine crankshaft and camshaft.
