A system and method for increasing the efficiency and/or power produced by an integrated gasification combined cycle system by increasing the integration between the air separation unit island, the heat recovery steam generator and the remainder of the system. By integrating heat produced by the heat recovery steam generator in the remainder of the integrated gasification combined cycle system, heat may be utilized that may have otherwise been lost or used further downstream in the system. The integration helps to increase the efficiency of the combustion reaction and/or the gasification reaction used to produce the syngas utilized in the integrated gasification combined cycle system.

Advanced ASU and HRSG integration for improved integrated gasification combined cycle efficiency

An integrated gasification combined cycle system. In one embodiment (FIG.) a system () includes an ion transport membrane air separation unit () for producing oxygen-enriched gas () and oxygen-depleted air (), a gasification system () for generating syngas with the oxygen-enriched gas (), a gas combustor () for reacting the syngas (), and a subsystem configured to provide a first stream of air to the combustor () at a first pressure and to provide a second stream of air to the air separation unit () at a second pressure greater than the first pressure. The subsystem includes a compressor () having multi-pressure outlets ().

System and method for generation of high pressure air in an integrated gasification combined cycle system

A system () and a method for converting carbonaceous fuel () into a gaseous product (). According to one embodiment a fuel slurry () is introduced into a chamber () and heated under sufficient pressure to prevent the carrier component () from boiling so that the carbonaceous component () does not separate from the carrier component (). The step of heating the carrier component () may include increasing pressure and temperature to place the carrier component () in a supercritical state while sustaining the carbonaceous component () and carrier component () in a mixed state. In this embodiment a pump () imposes sufficient chamber pressure to prevent boiling of the carrier component () as the mixture is heated to at least 345&#xb0; C., and a gasifier chamber () is positioned to receive the gaseous mixture () at a lower pressure than the supercritical pressure for creation of syngas ().

Supercritical pressurization of fuel slurry

A power generation system () and a method of generating power. In one embodiment of the system shown in FIG., a gasification subsystem () is configured to convert a carbonaceous fuel to fuel suitable for combustion in a gas turbine (). A first power generation cycle () includes the gas turbine () coupled to receive fuel from a gasifier (). A first Rankine cycle () is coupled to receive thermal energy from at least the first power generation cycle () and generate power with a first vapor turbine (). A second Rankine cycle () is coupled to receive thermal energy from the gasification subsystem () or the first power generation cycle () and generate power with a second vapor turbine (). In an associated method, syngas () is generated and processed to remove components therein. Power is generated in a first turbine () with the processed syngas (). Power is generated in a second turbine () with heat recovered from exhaust produced by the first turbine (). Power is generated in a third turbine () with heat recovered from the syngas ().

Power generation system incorporating multiple Rankine cycles

An integrated gasification combined cycle power generation system (). In one embodiment, shown in FIG., a gasifier () is configured to generate synthetic gas () from a carbonaceous material () and an oxygen supply () with a cleaning stage () positioned to receive synthetic gas () from the gasifier () and remove impurities therefrom. A gas turbine combustion system () including a turbine () is configured to receive fuel () from the gasifier () and a first air supply () from a first air compressor (). A steam turbine system () is configured to generate power with heat recovered from exhaust () generated by the gas turbine system () and an ion transport membrane air separation unit () includes a second air compressor () for generating a second air supply (). A first heat exchanger () is configured to cool the synthetic gas () prior to removal of impurities in the cleaning stage () by flowing the second air supply () through the first heat exchanger () so that the second air supply () receives heat from the synthetic gas ().

System and method for oxygen separation in an integrated gasification combined cycle system

A system () and method of modifying a combined cycle power generation system (). In one embodiment of the invention an existing system includes one or more first gas turbines, one or more first steam turbines, and one or more heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs). An exemplary method includes providing at least one second gas turbine of greater operating efficiency than each of the one or more first gas turbines and connecting at least one existing HRSG to receive exhaust output from the second gas turbine to generate steam. Also according to the invention a path is provided for mixing steam exiting a high pressure steam turbine with steam generated in a low pressure HRSG to route such mixed steam through a reheat section of a high temperature, high pressure HRSG so that reheated mixed steam exiting the reheat section can be routed into a low pressure steam turbine.

Combined cycle power generation

A power plant may include a combustion apparatus () producing an exhaust gas (), an absorber () receiving the exhaust gas (), the absorber () including a desiccant and producing a first stream of desiccant solution containing water and a first concentration of desiccant, and an apparatus () for dehydrating the first stream of desiccant solution while maintaining the water in a liquid phase. The apparatus () may include a heat exchanger (), a crystallizing heat exchanger (), a separator () and a flash tank () for dehydrating the desiccant solution while maintaining water in a liquid phase and subsequently recovering water from the solution.

System for recovering water from flue gas

A system and method for operating an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) gas turbine system that utilizes the fuel stream as a means of controlling the operation of the IGCC to achieve a target output and efficiency. The methods and systems enable the IGCC to be operated at reduced output, but without a corresponding drop in efficiency as compared to prior art gas turbine systems. Conversely, the IGCC may be operated at higher outputs. The methods and systems achieve the target output and efficiency by adjusting the chemical potential energy, sensible energy, or both of a fuel stream entering the combustion turbine. The chemical potential energy and sensible energy may be manually or automatically controlled.

IGCC design and operation for maximum plant output and minimum heat rate

A system () for removing water from a flue gas () includes a heat exchanger () for receiving a flow of heat exchanging fluid and the flue gas (). An absorber () may have a gas inlet () for receiving the flue gas () from the heat exchanger (), an inlet () for receiving a desiccant solution and a media () receiving the desiccant solution for providing surface area contact between the flue gas () and the desiccant solution A dual cooler () may include a first side () through which a heat exchanging fluid and the desiccant solution may be directed for cooling. Valving () may be provided for alternating a flow of the heat exchanging fluid and a flow of the desiccant solution through the first side () of the dual cooler ().
