Provided are methods for treating or preventing brain edema in a subject by administering an inhibitor of SLC26A11 to the subject. Also included are methods for preventing cell death, cell swelling, or elevated internal concentration of chloride ions in a cell by contacting the cell with an inhibitor of SLC26A11.

Urea derivatives which comprise piperidine or piperazine rings and further substitution are effective in ameliorating conditions characterized by unwanted calcium ion channel activity.

Sequences and partial sequences for three types of mammalian (human and rat sequences identified) T-type calcium channel subunits which we have labeled as the &#x3b1;, &#x3b1;and &#x3b1;subunits are provided. Knowledge of the sequence of these calcium channel permits the localization and recovery of the complete sequence from human cells, and the development of cell lines which express the novel calcium channels of the invention. These cells may be used for identifying compounds capable of acting as agonists or antagonists to the calcium channels.

Nucleic acids encoding mammalian T-type calcium channels

Aromatic derivatives of aliphatic diamines are effective in ameliorating conditions characterized by unwanted calcium ion channel activity, especially T-type and N-type channels. These conditions include, for example, stroke and pain.

Rat calcium channel subunits and related probes, cell lines and methods

A fluorescence based assay for compounds that modulate T-type calcium ion channels and that can be adapted to high throughput screening formats. Modulators of T-type channels are useful to correct functional abnormalities. These abnormalities are associated with epilepsy, pain, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension, certain types of cancer, diabetes, infertility, sexual dysfunction and other undesirable conditions.
