In one embodiment, a multi-carrier modem comprises: a transmitter configured to modulate symbols onto at least one of a plurality of the spectrally overlapping carrier signals; a processor coupled to the transmitter, wherein the processor outputs data for transmission by the transmitter, wherein the processor applies an inverse Fourier transform to the data transmitted by the transmitter; the processor modulating a first carrier of the plurality of spectrally overlapping carrier signals based on a first modulation scheme while modulating a second carrier of the plurality of spectrally overlapping carrier signals based on a second modulation scheme.

Multi-symbol non-coherent continuous phase modulation (CPM) detectors having a trellis structure, methods of continuous phase detection using a trellis structure, and trellis-based lock detectors and methods for digitally modulated signals are described. The continuous phase modulation detector includes receiver, observation, memory, and adjustment portions. The receiver has a trellis structure and is adapted for receiving digitally modulated signals having a generally continuous phase. The observation portion is adapted for performing multi-symbol observations on received digitally modulated signals and the memory is adapted for storing historic observation data corresponding to multi-symbol observations performed by the observation portion. The adjustment portion is adapted for selectively adjusting the receiver in accordance with stored historic observation data. A trellis-based lock detector computes a global survivor for consecutive time indexes as a maximum cumulative branch metric corresponding to a given time index for consecutive branches of the trellis structure.

A method of distributed loop control is described. The method includes receiving at a service unit downstream control and telephony information modulated on orthogonal carriers in a first frequency bandwidth over a distribution network. The method further includes transmitting from the service unit upstream telephony information and control data modulated on orthogonal carriers in a second frequency bandwidth over the distribution network. In addition, the method includes adjusting at least one local transmission characteristic when an adjustment command from a head end terminal is received in the downstream control data. The downstream control data is based on prior upstream transmissions from the service unit.

Method of distributed loop control for a multicarrier telephony transport

A apparatus for providing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and an inverse FFT is provided. The apparatus comprises a radix-N core. The radix-N core includes at least N multipliers. The radix-N core also includes a twiddle-factor lookup table that stores complex twiddle-factors. The twiddle-factor lookup table is coupled to one input of each of the multipliers. The radix-N core also includes a conversion random access memory (RAM) that stores transform points. The conversion RAM is coupled to another input of each of the multipliers. The radix-N core also includes an array of at least N-times-N adder-subtracter-accumulators.

Fast fourier transform apparatus and method

A communication system is described. The communication system includes a distribution network and a head end terminal adapted to transmit downstream control data and downstream telephony information in a first frequency bandwidth over the distribution network and adapted to receive upstream telephony information and upstream control data in a second frequency bandwidth over the distribution network. In addition the communication system includes a plurality of service units, each service unit operatively connected to the distribution network for upstream transmission of upstream telephony information and upstream control data in the second frequency bandwidth and for receipt of downstream control data and downstream telephony information in the first frequency bandwidth. The head end terminal includes a detector that detects at least one local transmission characteristic of a service unit and generates an adjustment command as a function of the detected at least one local transmission characteristic for transmittal. Each service unit adjusts the at least one local transmission characteristic when an adjustment command is received from the head end terminal in the downstream control data to the service unit.

Distributed control in a communication system

A method for monitoring at least one telephony communication n-bit channel, wherein one of the bits is a parity bit, includes sampling the parity bit of the n-bit channel. A probable bit error rate is derived from the sampling of the parity bit. The probable bit error rate can be compared to a pre-determined bit error rate value to determine if the at least one telephony communication n-bit channel is corrupted. If the at least one telephony communication n-bit channel is corrupted, the at least one telephony communication n-bit channel is re-allocated to an uncorrupted and unallocated telephony communication n-bit channel. Further, at least one unallocated telephony communication channel can be periodically monitored and error data accumulated to indicate the quality thereof.

Channel selection for a hybrid fiber coax network

The communication system includes a hybrid fiber/coax distribution network. A head end provides for downstream transmission of telephony and control data in a first frequency bandwidth over the hybrid fiber/coax distribution network and reception of upstream telephony and control data in a second frequency bandwidth over the hybrid fiber/coax distribution network. The head end includes a head end multicarrier modem for modulating at least downstream telephony information on a plurality of orthogonal carriers in the first frequency bandwidth and demodulating at least upstream telephony information modulated on a plurality of orthogonal carriers in the second frequency bandwidth. The head end further includes a controller operatively connected to the head end multicarrier modem for controlling transmission of the downstream telephony information and downstream control data and for controlling receipt of the upstream control data and upstream telephony information. The system further includes service units, each service unit operatively connected to the hybrid fiber/coax distribution network for upstream transmission of telephony and control data in the second frequency bandwidth and for receipt of the downstream control data and telephony in the first frequency bandwidth. Each service unit includes a service unit multicarrier modem for modulating at least the upstream telephony information on at least one carrier orthogonal at the head end terminal to another carrier in the second frequency bandwidth and for demodulating at least downstream telephony information modulated on at least a band of a plurality of orthogonal carriers in the first frequency bandwidth. Each service unit also includes a controller operatively connected to the service unit multicarrier modem for controlling the modulation of and demodulation performed by the service unit multicarrier modem. A method of monitoring communication channels, a distributed loop method for adjusting transmission characteristics to allow for transmission of data in a multi-point to point communication system, a polyphase filter technique for providing ingress protection and a scanning method for identifying frequency bands to be used for transmission by service units are also included. Also provided is a method and apparatus for performing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). In one embodiment, a scalable FFT system is built using a novel dual-radix butterfly core.

Communication system with multicarrier telephony transport

A receiver is synchronized to a signal and the presence of data in the signal is detected by responding to the signal to derive indications of the amount of time shift necessary to achieve synchronization between the receiver and signal. The receiver is adjusted to be in synchronization with the signal in response to the time shift indications. A measure of the spread of values of the time shift indications is derived. The presence of data in the signal is flagged in response to the spread of values being less than a threshold value.
