The present disclosure generally relates to a magnetic recording system comprising a magnetic recording head. The magnetic recording head comprises a main pole disposed at a media facing surface (MFS). The main pole is disposed between a trailing shield and a leading shield, the trailing shield and the leading shield each extending to the MFS. A first lead is disposed between the main pole and the trailing shield, and the first lead is recessed from the MFS. A first portion of the first lead is disposed in contact with the main pole. A first insulating layer is disposed between and in contact with a second portion of the first lead and the main pole, and the first insulating layer being recessed from the MFS. The first lead and the first insulating layer direct a current through the main pole at a location recessed from the MFS.

Current distal to media facing surface

The present disclosure relates to a magnetic recording head having an exchange biased leading shield or leading edge shield (LES). The LES is a bilayer structure. One or more layers are coupled below the LES such that the LES is disposed between the main pole and the one or more layers. The one or more layers exchange bias the LES such that the upper layer of the LES has a magnetization parallel to the magnetization of the trailing shield. The lower layer of the LES has a magnetization that is antiparallel to the magnetization of the upper layer of the LES. The one or more layers set the preferred direction for the lower layer of the LES and sets the LES as a two-domain state without relying upon the anisotropy field (Hk) of either the upper or lower layers of the LES.

Leading shield for magnetic recording heads

The present disclosure generally relates to data storage devices, and more specifically, to a magnetic media drive employing a magnetic recording head. The head includes a main pole, a trailing shield, and a MAMR stack including at least one magnetic layer. The magnetic layer has a surface facing the main pole, and the surface has a first side at a media facing surface (MFS) and a second side opposite the first side. The length of the second side is substantially less than the length of the first side. By reducing the length of the second side, the area to be switched at a location recessed from the MFS is reduced as a current flowing from the main pole to the trailing shield or from the trailing shield to the main pole. With the reduced area of the magnetic layer, the overall switch time of the magnetic layer is decreased.

MAMR stack shape optimization for magnetic recording

Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to a magnetic media drive employing a magnetic recording device. The magnetic recording device comprises a trailing gap disposed adjacent to a first surface of a main pole, a first side gap disposed adjacent to a second surface of the main pole, a second side gap disposed adjacent to a third surface of the main pole, and a leading gap disposed adjacent to a fourth surface of the main pole. A side shield surrounds the main pole and comprises a heavy metal first layer and a magnetic second layer. The first layer surrounds the first, second, and third surfaces of the main pole, or the second, third, and fourth surfaces of the main pole. The second layer surrounds the second and third surfaces of the main pole, and may further surround the fourth surface of the main pole.

Magnetic recording devices using virtual side shields for improved areal density capability

A magnetic head includes a main pole configured to serve as a first electrode, an upper pole containing a trailing magnetic shield configured to a serve as a second electrode, and an electrically conductive portion located in a trailing gap between the main pole and the trailing magnetic shield. The electrically conductive portion is not part of a spin torque oscillator stack, and the electrically conductive portion includes at least one electrically conductive, non-magnetic material layer. The main pole and the trailing magnetic shield are electrically shorted by the electrically conductive portion across the trailing gap between the main pole and the trailing magnetic shield such that an electrically conductive path is present between the main pole and the trailing magnetic shield through the electrically conductive portion.

A magnetic head includes a main pole configured to serve as a first electrode, an upper pole containing a trailing magnetic shield configured to a serve as a second electrode, and an electrically conductive portion located in a trailing gap between the main pole and the trailing magnetic shield. The electrically conductive portion is not part of a spin torque oscillator stack, and the electrically conductive portion includes first and second electrically conductive, non-magnetic material layers. The spin torque oscillator stack is coupled to the first electrically conductive, non-magnetic material layer. The main pole and the trailing magnetic shield are electrically shorted by the electrically conductive portion across the trailing gap between the main pole and the trailing magnetic shield such that an electrically conductive path is present between the main pole and the trailing magnetic shield through the electrically conductive portion.

The magnetic recording head comprises a main pole, an EAMR stack disposed on the main pole, and a trailing shield disposed on the EAMR stack. The EAMR stack comprises a seed layer disposed on the main pole, a spin torque layer disposed on the seed layer, and a spacer layer disposed on the spin torque layer. At least one surface of the spacer layer in contact with the spin torque layer has a smaller or reduced area than the spin torque layer. The at least one surface of the spacer layer in contact with the spin torque layer is recessed from a media facing surface and has a smaller cross-track width than the spin torque layer and a smaller width in the stripe height direction than the spin torque layer.

Energy assisted magnetic recording head having improved areal density capability

Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to magnetic recording systems, and more particularly to a magnetic recording system with a current-assisted write head. The write head comprises a main pole, a trailing shield disposed above the main pole, a trailing gap disposed between the main pole and the trailing shield, a side shield surrounding three sides of the main pole, the side shield being in contact with and disposed below the trailing shield and the trailing gap, and a side gap disposed between the side shield and each of the three sides of the main pole. The side gap comprises a non-magnetic electrically-conducting material to dissipate heat away from the main pole, lowering the resistance and temperature rise due to heating. The trailing gap may further comprise a non-magnetic electrically-conducting material. The write head may have a two terminal or three terminal connection configuration.

Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to a magnetic recording device comprising a magnetic recording head having a negative anisotropic magnetic (&#x2212;Ku) material notch. The magnetic recording device comprises a main pole disposed at a media facing surface (MFS), a trailing shield disposed adjacent to the main pole, and a trailing gap disposed between the main pole and the trailing shield. The trailing shield comprises a hot seed layer disposed adjacent to the trailing gap, and a notch comprising a &#x2212;Ku material in contact with the hot seed layer and the trailing gap. The notch is disposed adjacent to a first surface of the main pole at the MFS. The notch comprising the &#x2212;Ku material results in an increased effective write magnetic field, an increased down-track field gradient due to reduced shunting from the main pole to the trailing shield, leading to an increased areal density capacity.

The present disclosure is generally related to a magnetic media drive employing a magnetic recording head. The magnetic recording head comprises a main pole extending to a media facing surface (MFS). The main pole has a gradually increasing cross-section area with a low aspect ratio from the MFS to a surface recessed from and parallel to the MFS. The main pole comprises a first leading edge taper angle (LETA), a second LETA less than the first LETA, a first trailing edge taper angle (TETA), and a second TETA less than the first TETA. The main pole further comprises a first flare recessed a first distance from the MFS, the first flare having a first angle, and a second flare recessed a second distance from the MFS greater than the first distance, the second flare having a second angle greater than the first angle.
