A rotary heat and/or mass transfer arrangement in which a liquid component undergoes heat and/or mass transfer with a vapor component includes a rotor,on which a layer of fluid is applied by nozzles,The flow across the rotor is actively disturbed by a radial row of nozzles,to enhance the heat and/or mass transfer coefficients.

Rotary heat and/or mass transfer arrangements

A rotary heat pump,comprises a vapor generator,a condenser,an evaporator,and an absorber,interconnected to provide cyclic fluid flow paths for a volatile fluid component and an absorbent fluid therefor. To allow operation of the pump close to the crystallisation boundary the pump includes crystallisation control means which cause the temperature of the fluid in the region prone to crystallisation to be raised when the onset of crystallisation is detected. For example the pressure increase upstream of a crystallisation site may cause warm fluid to be diverted directly or indirectly to increase the fluid temperature at the crystallisation site. The Specification also describes features for controlling the absorbent mixture flow rate; for controlling the concentration thereof; for damping a scoop pump; for assuming flow onto the generator face; for pressure relief and extended operation of the pump; to novel heat exchangers; to metal compositions for the heat pump, and to hydrogen getters for use in heat pumps.

Heat pumps

A burner assembly includes a number of gas burners each utilizing a radiant ceramic plaque, the burners are disposed in confined combustion chambers where they direct heat towards a heat-receiving surface so that by this arrangement the plaque receives a substantial amount of back radiation.

Burner assemblies

An absorption-cycle heat pump comprises a rotary assembly including a vapor generator (GE,14), a condenser (CO,23), an absorber (AB,22), an evaporator (EV) and a solution heat exchanger (X,16). The vapor generator, the condenser and the absorber each include a wall (14, 23, 22 respectively) across which the volatile component (preferably water) and/or a liquid absorbent therefore are caused to flow under the action of the forces generated during rotation of the assembly. The evaporator comprises a plurality of finned heat exchange tubes 31 into which the volatile component is injected with a radially inwardly-directed component of motion, the tubes being of generally elliptical configuration disposed with their major axes extending generally radially. To maintain the evaporator heat exchange surfaces continuously wetted, excess volatile component is supplied such that a major part of the latter remains unvaporised after flow across the evaporator heat exchange surfaces and is collected in a reservoir (26), which also receives the condensate from the condenser, for re-injection into the evaporator tubes (31).

A boiler has a gas burner assembly and a heat exchanger positioned in a combustion chamber for heating water circulated through the heat exchanger by heat exchange with the combustion products. The performance of the heat exchanger is improved by rotating the heat exchanger to prevent formation of a boundary layer of cooler combustion products and/or a surface film of condensed moisture on the heat exchange surface.
