A screw actuator comprises a rotatable input member and a non-rotatable primary output member, wherein the input member is provided with a screw thread formation within which a plurality of spherical members are received to provide a ball screw coupling between the input member and the primary output member. The actuator includes a secondary output arrangement having first and second screw threaded parts in screw treaded engagement with the input member to provide a screw thread coupling between the input member and the secondary output arrangement. The first and second screw threaded parts are axially movable relative to one another, whereby, in the event that the ball screw coupling fails, relative axial movement of the first and second screw threaded parts serves to lock the first and second screw threaded parts onto the input member, thereby to stall the actuator.

Screw actuator

A no-back device for an actuator having a screw shaft extending along an axis and a brake element fixed for rotation with the shaft and extending laterally of the axis, the no-back device comprising a rotary ratchet member and a rotary friction member mounted for limited axial movement within a recess defined by a housing, and defining at least one path for passing fluid through the recess, the no-back device further comprising peripherally extending diversion means disposed between an outer periphery of the friction member and an inwardly facing peripheral surface of the housing whereby, in use, fluid passing through the recess is diverted away from the inwardly facing peripheral surface of the housing and across a laterally extending surface of the friction member.

A lock has a shaft coupled to a flexible shaft which synchronizes hydraulic actuators of a translating cowl thrust reverser. The shaft is provided with a rotary brake comprising axially movable rotating and fixed discs urged together by a spring. A geared rotary actuator comprises at least two axially aligned compound epicyclic gear trains driven by an input shaft so that output ring gears in each train rotate relatively. Sun gears in adjacent gear trains are drivingly coupled to the input shaft through a differential device which permits limited rotational displacement between the sun gears. An element, for example an aircraft lift control surface, may be mounted on one set of the ring gears by means of spindles which extend normally of a plane which includes the axes of the ring gears, so that as a result of stresses therein the element may tilt locally about the spindles.

Geared rotary actuator

A rotary to linear converter has a rotary input shaft and a linearly movable output element. A torque limiter arrests rotation of the shaft at a critical value of torque thereon. A friction device increase the torque on the shaft if a predetermined axial force on the output element is exceeded, this torque increase being sufficient to operate the limiter. The arrangement renders operation of the torque limiter directly responsive to axial force on the output element.

Torque limiting arrangement

A fluid powered actuator system includes two identical fluid powered actuators operable by respective supply pressures which are controlled by respective identical valve arrangements. Operating positions of flow control elements of the valve arrangements are applied through respective couplings to a differential arrangement which operates, if these positions differ by an unacceptable amount, to apply an error indication through respective coupling to prevent the supply pressures from being applied to the respective actuators.

Fluid powered actuator system

A device is provided for causing the force applied by a rotary transmission to a driven apparatus to have a substantially constant limiting value of the range of operation of the apparatus, and comprises a clutch which is responsive to the transmitted torque and to the operating position of an output member of the device, and a brake which is responsive to relative movement of the clutch parts to arrest at least the output member.
