Polymers, particularly those used in pressure-sensitive adhesives, are prepared from a mixture of structural isomers of a secondary alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer. The mixture is made by dehydrating a biobased C-Calcohol with a first acid catalyst using a continuous process to form a mixture of olefins, and reacting (meth)acrylic acid with at least some of the mixture of olefins in the presence of a second acid catalyst. The adhesives are characterized by exhibiting an overall balance of adhesive and cohesive characteristics, and containing biobased material.

Method for preparing (meth)acrylates of biobased alcohols and polymers thereof

A method of making 2-octyl acrylate comprising reacting 2-octanol with acrylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst and added water is described. The 2-octanol may be derived from renewable resources, such as castor oil. The method is efficient and provides selectivity for 2-octyl acrylate.

A method of making a filled resin includes the steps of: Providing a wiped film evaporator with an internal evaporator chamber maintained under vacuum and having an internal chamber wall maintained at an elevated temperature; introducing solvent-borne particles and organic matrix into the internal chamber; and compounding the solvent-borne particles and the organic matrix in the internal evaporator chamber by forming a thin film against the internal chamber wall, the thin film including organic matrix and particles, and the vacuum conditions and elevated temperature being sufficient to remove solvent from the particles and organic matrix to provide the filled resin. Less than about 10% of the particles in the resulting filled resin are agglomerated.

The first cholesteric liquid crystal polymer is different than the second cholesteric liquid crystal polymer. Then, forming from the mixture an optical body including a first layer, a second layer, and a third layer disposed between the first and second layer. The first layer includes a majority of the first cholesteric liquid crystal polymer. The second layer includes a majority of a second cholesteric liquid crystal monomer. The third layer includes the second cholesteric liquid crystal polymer.

The compounds have smectic mesophases or latent smectic mesophases and are useful, for example, in liquid crystal display devices.
