Processes are described for producing mesophase pitch. The processes generally comprise providing a feedstock having a T5≥400° F. (204° C.) and a T95≤1,400° F. (760° C.) and heating the feedstock at a temperature ranging from about 420° C. to about 520° C. to produce a heat treated product including isotropic pitch. Generally, the heating is conducted under conditions sufficient to satisfy the relationship [X*Y]≥20,000 seconds, wherein X is the equivalent reaction time of the heating, and wherein Y is the bromine number of the feedstock as measured in accordance with ASTM D1159. The processes generally further comprise contacting the isotropic pitch with a solvent having a Solubility Blending number (S) of at least about 10 SU under conditions sufficient to produce a solvent fraction comprising the solvent and an insoluble fraction comprising mesophase pitch, and recovering the mesophase pitch.

Processes for producing mesophase pitch

Hydrocarbon-containing fluids are provided for use during solvent-assisted hydroprocessing of pyrolysis tar, such as steam cracker tar. The hydrocarbon-containing fluids can be used at any convenient time, such as during start-up of a pyrolysis process when recycled liquid pyrolysis product is not available; when the amount of liquid pyrolysis product available for recycle is not sufficient to maintain desired hydroprocessing conditions; and/or when the changes to the quality of the liquid pyrolysis product reduce the suitability of the recycle stream for use as a utility fluid.

Fluid for tar hydroprocessing

In an embodiment, a method for decreasing reactor fouling in a steam cracking process is provided. The method includes steam cracking a hydrocarbon feed to obtain a quench oil composition comprising a concentration of donatable hydrogen of 0.5 wt. % or more based on a total weight percent of the quench oil composition; exposing a steam cracker effluent flowing from a pyrolysis furnace to the quench oil composition to form a mixture; and fractionating the mixture in a separation apparatus to obtain a steam cracker tar. In another embodiment, a hydrocarbon mixture is provided. The hydrocarbon mixture includes a mid-cut composition.

Steam cracking processes and the use of solvents streams produced by solvent-assisted tar conversion processes

A process for olefin oligomerization can include contacting a feedstock comprising Cand Colefins/paraffins under oligomerization conditions in the presence of an oligomerization catalyst, wherein n is 2 to 15; and recovering an oligomeric product comprising Coligomers having a branching index of less than 2.1. Optionally, the feedstock can further comprise Colefins/paraffins.

Oligomerization of olefins

Processes for preparing a low particulate liquid hydrocarbon product are provided and includes blending a tar stream containing particles with a fluid to produce a fluid-feed mixture containing tar, the particles, and the fluid, and centrifuging the fluid-feed mixture at a temperature of greater than 60&#xb0; C. to produce a higher density portion and a lower density portion, where the lower density portion contains no more than 25 wt % of the particles in the fluid-feed mixture.

Systems and methods are provided for co-processing of pyrolysis tar with pre-pyrolysis flash bottoms. In some aspects, the co-processing can correspond to solvent-assisted hydroprocessing. By combining pyrolysis tar and flash bottoms with a solvent, various difficulties associated with hydroprocessing of the fractions can be reduced or minimized, such as difficulties associated with hydroprocessing of high viscosity feeds and/or high sulfur feeds. Optionally, separate solvents and/or fluxes can be used for the pyrolysis tar and the flash bottoms. The resulting upgraded products can be suitable, for example, for inclusion in low sulfur fuel oils (LSFO).

Upgrading of pyrolysis tar and flash bottoms

In some examples, hydrocarbon feed and a diluent such as steam are mixed, and heated. A vapor phase product and a liquid phase product can be separated from the heated mixture. The liquid phase product can be hydroprocessed to produce a first hydroprocessed product. A pitch and one or more hydrocarbon products can be separated from the first hydroprocessed product. The pitch can be contacted with a diluent to produce a pitch-diluent mixture. The pitch-diluent mixture can be hydroprocessed to produce a second hydroprocessed product. A hydroprocessor heavy product and a utility fluid product can be separated from the second hydroprocessed product. The diluent can be or include at least a portion of the utility fluid product. The vapor phase product can be steam cracked to produce a steam cracker effluent. A tar product and a process gas that can include ethylene and propylene can be separated from the steam cracker effluent.

Process for C5+ hydrocarbon conversion

This invention relates to a process for determining the suitability of pyrolysis tar, such as steam cracker tar, for upgrading using hydroprocessing without excessive fouling of the hydroprocessing reactor. A pyrolysis tar is sampled, the sample is analyzed to determine one or more characteristics of the tar related to tar reactivity, and the analysis is used to determine conditions under which the tar can be blended, pre-treated, and/or hydroprocessed.

Pyrolysis tar conversion

Processes for improving hydrocarbon feedstock compatibility are provided. More specifically, a process for preparing a liquid hydrocarbon product includes heat soaking a tar stream to produce a reduced reactivity tar and blending the reduced reactivity tar with a utility fluid comprising recycle solvent to produce a lower viscosity, reduced reactivity tar. The process also includes hydroprocessing the lower viscosity, reduced reactivity tar at a temperature of greater than 350&#xb0; C. to produce a total liquids product containing the liquid hydrocarbon product and the recycle solvent. The process further includes separating the recycle solvent from the total liquids product, where the recycle solvent has the Sof greater than 110, and flowing the recycle solvent to the reduced reactivity tar for blending to produce the lower viscosity, reduced reactivity tar.

Process to maintain high solvency of recycle solvent during upgrading of steam cracked tar

In some examples, a vapor phase product and a liquid phase product can be separated from a heated mixture that can include steam and a hydrocarbon. The liquid phase product can be catalytically cracked in the presence of a fluidized catalyst to produce a catalytically cracked effluent. A bottoms product can be separated from the catalytically cracked effluent. The bottoms product can be hydroprocessed to produce a hydroprocessed product. For example, the bottoms product can be hydroprocessed under pre-treater hydroprocessing conditions to produce a pre-treated bottoms product and the pre-treated bottoms product can be hydroprocessed under bottoms product hydroprocessing conditions to produce the hydroprocessed product. A hydroprocessor heavy product can be separated from the hydroprocessed product. The vapor phase product can be steam cracked to produce a steam cracker effluent. A tar product and an upgraded steam cracker effluent can be separated from the steam cracker effluent.

In some examples, a vapor phase product and a liquid phase product can be separated from a heated mixture that includes steam and a hydrocarbon. The vapor phase product can be steam cracked to produce a steam cracker effluent. The steam cracker effluent can be contacted with a quench fluid to produce a cooled steam cracker effluent. The steam cracker effluent can be at a temperature of &#x3e;300&#xb0; C. when initially contacted with the quench fluid. A tar product and a process gas that can include ethylene and propylene can be separated from the cooled steam cracker effluent. The tar product can be hydroprocessed to produce a first hydroprocessed product. A hydroprocessor heavy product and a utility fluid product can be separated from the first hydroprocessed product. The quench fluid can be or include at least a portion of the utility fluid product.

Process for Chydrocarbon conversion

Processes for preparing a low particulate liquid hydrocarbon product are provided and include blending a tar stream containing particles with a fluid and heating to a temperature of 250&#xb0; C. or greater to produce a fluid-feed mixture that contains tar, the particles, and the fluid. The fluid-feed mixture contains about 20 wt % or greater of the fluid, based on a combined weight of the tar stream and the fluid. Also, about 25 wt % to about 99 wt % of the particles in the tar stream are dissolved or decomposed when producing the fluid-feed mixture.

Solvent and temperature assisted dissolution of solids from steam cracked tar

The present disclosure provides methods for hydroprocessing of heavy oils, such as pyrolysis tars. For example, a process for preparing a liquid hydrocarbon product includes providing a first process stream comprising a reduced reactivity tar, and blending the first process stream with a utility fluid to produce a second process stream comprising solids and a reduced reactivity, lower viscosity tar. The method can includes introducing the second process stream into a guard reactor without sulfiding the guard reactor catalyst(s) prior to introducing the second process stream into the guard reactor. The method includes hydroprocessing the second process stream in the guard reactor under mild hydroprocessing conditions to produce a third process stream. The method includes hydroprocessing the third process stream to produce a fourth process stream having a bromine number (BN) lower than 12 and comprising the liquid hydrocarbon product and the utility fluid.

Self-sulfiding of guard reactor catalyst for solvent assisted tar conversion processes

This invention relates to a process for determining the suitability of pyrolysis tar, such as steam cracker tar, for upgrading using hydroprocessing without excessive fouling of the hydroprocessing reactor. The invention includes establishing a reference activity for the thermally treating the pyrolysis tar to produce a treated tar having a lesser reactivity.
