The present invention is an apparatus and method for generating a barcode with a human readable interpretation (HRI). The method includes receiving a data set comprising an application identifier and a data portion. The data set further includes a first special character before the application identifier and a second special character after the application identifier and before the data portion. The application identifier and data in the data portion have a one to one correspondence with an HRI. The method further includes generating a barcode encoding data set based on the data set, including stripping the first special character and the second special character from the data set; generating an HRI data set based on the data set; and generating the barcode with the HRI based on the barcode encoding data set and the HRI data set.

The present invention is a system and method for generating a barcode with a human readable interpretation (HRI), herein the barcode includes an application identifier. The characters are input as an input data set that is equivalent to the complete (HRI) with a special character immediately after the application identifier. Generating a barcode encoding data set for encoding the barcode is based on the input data set. Generating the barcode encoding data set includes interpreting the special character as a field separator between the application identifier and a data portion. Generating a data set for the human readable interpretation is based on the input data set and includes converting the special character to a symbol. Generating the barcode with the human readable interpretation includes combining the barcode encoding data set and the data set for the human readable interpretation.

A bar code or similar symbol can be printed accurately within a specified printing area by a printer for printing such symbols. The printer has a symbol image generator for converting display data to a symbol and has hardware or software for reporting the size of the converted symbol to a host device. The host sends specific commands and text data for representation in the printed symbol to the printer for printing. As a result, the host can confirm whether printing within the specific area is possible.
