A composite metal polybasic salt containing a trivalent metal, zinc metal and a divalent metal as metal components and having a novel crystal structure, and a method of preparing the same. The invention further deals with a composite metal polybasic salt which has anion-exchanging property, which by itself is useful as an anion-exchanger, capable of introducing anions suited for the use upon anion-exchange, and finds a wide range of applications, and a method of preparing the same. The composite metal polybasic salt has a particular chemical composition and X-ray diffraction peaks, exhibiting peaks at 2&thgr;&equals;2 to 15&deg;, 2&thgr;&equals;19.5 to 24&deg; and 2&thgr;&equals;33 to 50&deg;, and a single peak at 2&thgr;&equals;60 to 64&deg; in the X-ray diffraction (Cu-&agr;).

A process for producing a columbite-type niobate and a process for producing a niobium-containing lead-type perovskite compound using the columbite-type niobate. A precursor slurry of a columbite compound composed of a fresh niobium hydroxide, a metal acetate and ammonium aqueous solution is spray-dried, and is calcined at 500.degree. C. or higher to obtain a crystalline columbite-type compound having grain sizes of 1 .mu.m or smaller to which was then mixed a lead component. The mixture is calcined, pulverized and is sintered at a temperature of 800.degree. to 1100.degree. C. to synthesize a highly dielectric material of a niobium-containing lead-type composite perovskite. The precursor of columbite is calcined at 500.degree. to 1100.degree. C. to obtain fine columbite-type niobate crystals of grain sizes of 1 .mu.m or smaller. A lead-type perovskite compound using the above crystals can be sintered at a temperature of as low as 950.degree. C. or lower, and the sintered product thereof has a homogeneous and fine texture and excellent dielectric properties that could not be obtained by the conventional solid-phase process.

Synthetic stevensite composed of stevensite-type sodium magnesium phylosilicate of which metallic components consist essentially of magnesium, sodium and silicon. Disclosed is a composite body comprising amorphous and porous silica or silica-alumina and a layer of an aluminum-containing phylosilicate formed on surfaces of primary particles of the silica or silica-alumina. This composite phylosilicate is obtained by reacting a water-soluble silicate, a water-soluble zinc salt or magnesium salt and a water-soluble aluminum salt or aluminate in an aqueous medium containing a sol or gel of silica or silica-alumina. This composite phylosilicate has a large specific surface area and a large pore volume and has both the properties of a solid acid and the properties of a solid base.
