A coating method characterized in that the method comprises the steps of applying a thermosetting coating composition containing a pigment to a substrate to be coated, applying a first clear coating composition to the coat to form a first clear coat, baking the two coats at the same time for curing, applying to the cured coats a second clear coating composition capable of forming a second clear coat having, when cured, a molecular weight between crosslinks of about 200 or less as determined by a xylene-swelling method and baking the second clear coat for curing.

In a pigment dispersion comprising a pigment, a dispersing agent and an organic dispersing medium, the improvement wherein the dispersing agent is the reaction product of an amino resin, an alkyd resin or an acrylic resin with a silane coupling agent, or the reaction product of both an alkyd resin or an acrylic resin and an amino resin with a silane coupling agent.

Pigment dispersion

A method for improving emulsion paint which is characterized in that 1 to 40 parts by weight as solids of aqueous acrylic resin solution is added to 100 parts by weight as resin solids of emulsion paint, said aqueous acrylic resin solution being produced from ethylenically unsaturated monomer having tertiary amine group, ethylenically unsaturated monomer having carboxyl group(s) and other ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The improved emulsion paint thereby formed has a low thixotropic property and an excellent coating property, and forms excellent coating film with good water resistance, moisture resistance and chemical resistance.
