A display unit includes a display panel including a display region and a terminal region on a first substrate, the display region including a plurality of pixels, each of the plurality of pixels including a light emitting element, and the terminal region including a plurality of terminals at a part of a peripheral region of the display region. The light emitting element includes a first electrode, an organic layer, and a second electrode that is provided commonly to the plurality of pixels, in order from the first substrate side. The second electrode extends, continuously in a plan view, to an end of the first substrate in a region on the first substrate except for the terminal region, and is configured to be electrically disconnected from an exterior member of the display panel.

The invention provides a light emitting device which can prevent irregular color by reducing film thickness distribution and a display unit using it. A first electrode, an organic layer including a light emitting layer, a second electrode including a semi-transparent electrode are sequentially layered on a driving substrate. A driving system using an intercalation substance as a novel mechanochemical system includes an actuator using the intercalation substance and driven by exchange of solutions or by changing concentration of a solution, and a solution supplier that supplies the actuator with the driving solution or solutions. The actuator is composed of one or more cylindrical or fiber-shaped elements each extending in the expanding and contracting direction of the intercalation substance, or one or more film-shaped or plate-shaped elements each having a major surface extending vertically of the expanding and contracting direction of the intercalation substance. The driving system is used as artificial muscle, for example.

This enables to realize a monostable mode with a sufficient stability even at low temperature and a sufficient analog tone and contrast ratio.

Monostable ferroelectric liquid crystal display apparatus

A monostable ferroelectric liquid crystal display in which a stable monostable mode is realized to achieve sufficient analog gradation and contrast. A pair of substrates, processed with uniaxial orientation, are placed so that the directions of orientation processing will be substantially parallel to each other. Into the gap between the two substrates is charged a ferroelectric liquid crystal material. The component of projection on the substrates of the axial direction of a cone drawn by the liquid crystal molecules of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material and that of the axial direction of the liquid crystal molecules themselves are substantially coincident with the direction of the processing for orientation of the substrates. Monostability is achieved with this state as an initial state. The ferroelectric liquid crystal material is a liquid crystal composition including a compound comprised of a phenyl pyrimidine skeleton to each terminal end of which is linked an alkyl chain, with the sum of carbon atoms of the alkyl chains being equal to 17.

A solid-state displacement element includes an inorganic layered compound having a layered structure and an organic substance inserted between layers of the inorganic layered compound. The solid-state displacement element expands or contracts in the lamination direction of the inorganic layered compound when irradiated with controlling light. An optical element and an interference filter using the same principle of expansion or contraction as that in the solid-state displacement element are also disclosed.
