The composite material includes inorganic nanoparticles dispersed in a polymer having a siloxane bond, the inorganic nanoparticles being coated with an organic compound. The organic compound is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acids, phosphinic acid, phosphonic acid, sulfinic acid, sulfonic acid, and thiols, and the selected compound contains an aryl group or an aryloxy group. The polymer is selected from the group consisting of methylphenyl polysiloxane, methylphenyl hydrogen polysiloxane, a mixture methylphenyl polysiloxane and methylphenyl hydrogen polysiloxane, or methylphenyl polysiloxane, methylphenyl hydrogen polysiloxane, and a mixture of methylphenyl polysiloxane and methylphenyl hydrogen polysiloxane. A thin film magnetic recording head comprises a substrate, a first magnetic core formed on the substrate, a second magnetic core having the front end face with a magnetic gap with respect to the front end face of the first magnetic core, and a coil for developing magnetic flux between the front end portions of the magnetic cores. A width of the second magnetic core at the front end portion thereof is chosen to be smaller than that of the first magnetic core. The second magnetic core is at a leading position relative to the second magnetic core in a traveling direction on a recording medium. In such configuration, it is possible to reduce side erase due to recording magnetic flux fringing and to achieve high density of magnetic recording while maintaining the conventional fabrication steps for the thin film magnetic recording head, thereby avoiding the problem in the fabrication.

A first ferromagnetic layer is made to show a single magnetic domain to prevent any magnetic walls from appearing. A pair of bias layers are made of a hard magnetic material showing a high resistivity are arranged at opposite ends of a TMR thin film . As a result, the sense current flowing through the TMR thin film is prevented from diverting to the bias layers . Thus, a sufficiently strong bias magnetic field can be applied to the TMR thin film . As a result, the free layer of the TMR thin film is made to show a single magnetic domain to prevent any magnetic walls from appearing.

A magnetic functional device allowing magnetization switching at a high speed even if the size of a magnetic substance is made finer on the sub-micron order. The magnetic functional device includes an information carrier layer formed by a magnetic substance; and a strain-imparting layer (such as piezoelectric layer) formed below the information layer and operably configured to impart a drive force to change the direction of a magnetization vector lying in a first plane of the information carrier thereby processing binary or more information by magnetization directions of the information carrier layer; wherein the drive force is applied in pulse to the information carrier layer in a direction nearly perpendicular to the first plane in which lies the magnetization vector of the information carrier layer when the magnetization vector is in an initial state before the application of the drive force. An effective field derived from a magnetic anisotropy or exchange interaction is used as the drive force.

Magnetization drive method, magnetic functional device, and magnetic apparatus

A magnetic gap is formed to be vertical to the film forming surface of a substrate with high accuracy by a simple method. The method comprises a non-magnetic film forming step of forming a non-magnetic film made of the non-magnetic material on the substrate, a high selectivity film forming step of forming a high selectivity film made of a material which has a higher selectivity ratio with respect to reactive ion etching than the non-magnetic material, on the non-magnetic film formed, a patterning step of patterning the high-selectivity film into a predetermined shape, and an etching step of etching the non-magnetic film by reactive ion etching, using the high selectivity film as a mask.

Etching method and a method of manufacturing a magnetic head

Even when manufacturing of a waveguide is fluctuated and an optical parameter is fluctuated or a wavelength of emitted light is fluctuated, a phase difference between two intrinsic modes can be compensated (positive integral multiple of .pi.). Thus, it is possible to prevent a reproduced signal from being deteriorated by elliptically polarized light. A magneto-optical reproducing pickup includes an optical waveguide (4) for guiding light reflected on a magneto-optical recording medium to a differential photo-detecting unit (9) side and phase compensating circuitry for compensating a phase difference between light components of a TE mode an a TM mode included in reflected light. In this case, the phase compensating circuitry comprises the optical waveguide (4) composed of a substrate formed of an electrooptic crystal and a thin film having a light refractive index higher than that of the substrate formed on the substrate, phase control electrodes (21a and 21b) for applying an electric field to the optical waveguide (4) in the direction along the TM mode and a feedback circuit (11).

Magneto-optical pickup device having phase compensating circuitry

Even when manufacturing of a waveguide is fluctuated and an optical parameter is fluctuated or a wavelength of emitted light is fluctuated, a phase difference between two intrinsic modes can be compensated (positive integral multiple of .pi.). In this case, the phase compensating circuitry comprises the optical waveguide (4) composed of a substrate formed of an electrooptic crystal and a thin film having a light refractive index higher than that of the substrate formed on the substrate, phase control electrodes (21a and 22b) for applying an electric field to the optical waveguide (4) in the direction along the TM mode and a feedback circuit (11).

A planar thin film magnetic head is disclosed wherein an axis of easy magnetization in the vicinity of a magnetic gap of a magnetic yoke is forcibly made coincident with the direction of a track width by a magnetic field due to current flowing in a conductor layer. Accordingly, even though the track width is small, a high magnetic permeability, low Barkhausen noise and linear responsiveness can be realized to thereby improve the sensitivity, output and linearity. In another aspect of the invention, a throat portion is eliminated from a thin film magnetic core forming a magnetic gap. The thin film magnetic core is configured such that a pair of magnetic members constituting the magnetic core are diverged from the magnetic gap so that a divergent angle .theta., of first opposite side edges of the magnetic members, from a direction of the gap length of the magnetic gap, is set to the range of 30.degree..ltoreq..theta..ltoreq.80.degree., and the magnetic members have second opposite side edges extending in substantially parallel to the direction of the gap length of the magnetic gap. Accordingly, even though a track width is reduced less than 10 .mu.m, adjoining crosstalk or off track crosstalk can be avoided to thereby realize low-noise and high quality reproduction and improve the operating characteristics.

Planar thin film magnetic head

A thin film magnetic head comprises a thin film magnetic core provided with a magnetic head gap, forming part of a first closed magnetic path and extended substantially in parallel to an air bearing surface to be disposed opposite to the surface of a magnetic recording medium, a head coil magnetically coupled with the first closed magnetic path, and a magnetoresistance-effect element forming a second closed magnetic path magnetically coupled with a portion of the first closed magnetic path including the magnetic head gap. The thin film magnetic head is provided with auxiliary magnetic head gaps respectively in portions of the first closed magnetic path other than the portion including the magnetic head gap. The portions of the first closed magnetic path provided with the auxiliary magnetic head gaps have comparatively high magnetic resistances, so that the distribution of magnetic flux to the magnetoresistance-effect element can be regulated to improve the reproducing efficiency of the magnetoresistance-effect element.
