A message queuing mail system is improved by preventing duplication of mail messages at the source when the same mail message is being sent to a plurality of destinations and also preventing unnecessary later redirection of mail messages in the mail delivery network, without requiring that the mail delivery netowrk have access to a mail directory, by defining addressing information and procedures that create, manipulate, and use the addressing information in a way that ensures that messages are replicated and redirected in the mail delivery network only when required.

A system for allowing a first computer program in a first language to cooperatively process with a second object oriented computer program in another language is described. A generic send message function is interposed between the first and second computer programs to control the exchange of messages. In order to achieve this the generic send message function has access to a description of the classes in the second computer program. Having access to such a description allows the generic send message function to efficiently transfer messages between the different computer programs, and also provides the ability for the creation of new objects of classes spanning environmental boundaries. The description of the object includes data identifying the location of instance variable data for each object, a pointer to class description which includes data identifying the environment in which the class operates, a pointer to any parent class, a list of functions provided by each class, and data identifying the length of instance variable data for each object.

A multiple window display system includes a display device and a screen ownership area pointing to the identity of the window which is to contribute the data for each display area of the display device. An ordered list is maintained of the active windows in the priority order thereof. Means are provided to regenerate the screen ownership area from the ordered list, on each change made to the list, in terms of list position per device display area, by overwriting, progressing through the list in order of increasingly significantly priority order, the list indicating, in each position thereof, the identity of the window having the respective priority. The list contains the addresses of the windows in storage and the type thereof. The screen ownership area is reset to the lowest potential priority list position value and is overwritten.

A data display system in which input-output display devices are connected to a central processor, and users select application programs that are run on the central processor. The control system of the central processor includes a display manager control system and a windowing control mechanism which allows a plurality of tasks to be performed concurrently and the results displayed in areas of a display screen. The windowing control mechanism includes, a task manager control program which runs as an application in the display manager control system and includes means to interact, via the display manager, with the operator to allow applications to be initiated, means to create tasks to control the processing of the application in such a way that the applications can be suspended or resumed according to whether the operator is ready for them, and means to identify to the display manager a coordination controller that the display manager can call to allow the task manager to suspend and resume applications. The display manager includes, means to combine data from each application and build a display representation that shows many windows into the various applications onto a single screen, and means to call the coordination controller identified by the task management application so that the task manager can suspend applications that are waiting for input and resume those applications which have input available.
