A method for predicting the remaining travel distance of an electric vehicle. The method includes determining a useable battery energy value based on battery state-of-charge and battery capacity and a power value needed to heat or cool a vehicle cabin. The method determines an available battery energy value based on the useable battery energy value and an estimated energy value to provide the vehicle cabin heating or cooling, where the estimated energy value is determined using the power value. The method determines a recent energy used value based on an actual recent HVAC energy used value, a recent energy used value with no HVAC system loads and a recent energy used value with maximum HVAC system loads. The method determines a recent distance traveled value and determines the range by dividing the recent distance traveled value by the recent energy used value and multiplying by the available battery energy value.

Electrical vehicle range prediction

An automatic transmission for a vehicle includes a main box controlled using a series of clutches, and an underdrive assembly controlled using a series of clutches and at least one overrunning clutch. In achieving a double-swap downshift from a first transmission 'gear' employing a first main box clutch and a first underdrive assembly clutch, to a second transmission 'gear' employing a second main box clutch and a second underdrive assembly clutch, a controller delays release of the first main box clutch until after the second underdrive assembly clutch has been prefilled, and fully applies the second underdrive assembly clutch only after slip has been detected in both the main box and the underdrive assembly. Additionally, the controller fully applies the second main box clutch only after the second underdrive assembly clutch has itself been fully applied.

Transmission downshift swap-shift control

An automatic transmission for a vehicle includes a multi-plate clutch having an applied state and a released state and an overrunning clutch having an engaged state and an overrunning state. In addition, the transmission includes a controller that effectuates a gear shift of the transmission by applying a volume of fluid to the multi-plate clutch to toggle the multi-plate clutch from the released state to the applied state at approximately the same time the overrunning clutch is toggled into the overrunning state.
