A self-encrypting drive (SED) comprises an SED controller and a nonvolatile storage medium (NVSM) responsive to the SED controller. The SED controller enables the SED to perform operations comprising: (a) receiving an encrypted media encryption key (eMEK) for a client; (b) decrypting the eMEK into an unencrypted media encryption key (MEK); (c) receiving a write request from the client, wherein the write request includes data to be stored and a key tag value associated with the MEK; (d) using the key tag value to select the MEK for the write request; (e) using the MEK for the write request to encrypt the data from the client; and (f) storing the encrypted data in a region of the NVSM allocated to the client. Technology for fine-grain encryption and secure key injection on self-encrypting drives

An embodiment of an electronic apparatus may include one or more substrates, and logic coupled to the one or more substrates, the logic to control access to a persistent storage media based on one of a first access protocol and a second access protocol that is different from the first access protocol, and select between the first access protocol and the second access protocol at runtime based on a user configurable parameter. Storage device with client reconfigurable protocol

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for distributed management in a storage system. The invention distributes increasingly complex storage management tasks to a message management module, a drive management module, a cache management module, and an interface management module to control operations of one or more storage devices, without depending on the availability of a 'super' microprocessor. Furthermore, the invention provides for efficient inter-module communication through point-to-point passing of asynchronous queued messages and use of a centralized input/output context memory, such that all said modules may work in parallel independently and cooperatively, optimizing storage input/output performance at a reduced cost.
