A method for accessing a computing device including launching a first operating system having a bootloader to boot a second operating system into a random-access memory on the computing device, the first operating system and the second operating system having access to an administrator password contained in an administrator password file located in a persistent file of the computing device and booting the second operating system from the first operating system bootloader to populate a filesystem into the second operating system. Also, executing a login failsafe by the second operating system to read the administrator password contained in the administrator password file located in the persistent file and installing the administrator password file in the filesystem of the second operating system by the login failsafe. The method further including failing to complete the booting of the second operating system and allowing access to the computing device through an administrator user account protected by the administrator password when the second operating system fails to complete the booting.

A method for detection of network address spoofing and false positive avoidance in a network is described herein. The network may include one or more hosts and a network management system. The network management system may identify a suspicious host in the network. A condition indicative of network address spoofing by the suspicious host may be detected. It may be determined whether the spoofing condition is expected in normal traffic of the network. In response to a determination that the spoofing condition is expected, it is determined that the suspicious host generated normal traffic.

Apparatus and methods for determining a switching device and port to which a user selected end-node in a computer network is connected may include receiving an address of a user determined end-node and discovering a switching device that forwards traffic to no other device on the same port as the switching device forwards traffic to the selected end-node. The apparatus and methods may output an address of the discovered switching device and port to the user.

Systems, methods, and device are provided for device status identification. One method embodiment includes transmitting an SNMP message to a device. The method includes opening a socket connection on the device in response to an SNMP error message returned from the device. And, the method includes initiating a time-out function upon opening the socket connection.

Methods and systems for verifying that devices in a network are properly connected physically are described. A listing is received from a device in the network. The listing identifies other devices coupled to the device and also identifies which communication port of the device each of the other devices is coupled to. The listing is compared against reference information representing the design of the network. Discrepancies between the listing and the reference information are identified.
