Solvents which may be used as mediums for the polymerization of olefinic hydrocarbons to form polymers useful as membranes in a gas separation process require purification to remove any impurities which will effect the aforesaid polymerization. Purification of these solvents such as cyclohexane may be effected by treating the solvent with titanium tetrachloride, contacting the solution with an adsorbent such as silica gel and thereafter distilling the solvent in the presence of a purification agent such as an alkaline metal aluminum hydride or borohydride.

Purification of cyclohexane

A support matrix is described where a porous inorganic support is impregnated with an amine-bearing polymer whose backbone is polar and hydrophilic. The amino groups are cross-linked and themselves bear pendant aldehyde groups kept well away from the surface of the polymer-coated support.

Epiamine-based support matrix

A support matrix comprising a porous support impregnated with a polyamine substantially all of whose nitrogens bear pendant epoxide groups can be readily used to immobilize enzymes. Because immobilization results from formation of a hydrolytically stable carbon-nitrogen single bond, the resulting immobilized enzyme system may be advantageously used where hydrolytic instability of the bound enzyme is an important consideration.

Support matrix for immobilized enzymes

A method of preparing p-aminodiphenylamines from diphenylamines is described whereby neither the N-nitrosodiphenylamine or the p-nitrosodiphenylamine need be isolated. The method rests on the discovery that alkali metal salts of p-nitrosodiphenylamines are soluble in non-aqueous organic solvent systems consisting of certain aromatic hydrocarbons and saturated aliphatic alcohols, and that such salts can be readily hydrogenated in their non-aqueous solution to the corresponding p-aminodiphenylamine.

Preparation of p-aminodiphenylamines

The desired compounds, namely, N-phenyl-N'-alkylphenylenediamines, are prepared by the reductive alkylation of a nitrogen-containing diphenylamine and a ketone in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst. The desired product may be obtained in a more economical way when effecting the process in a continuous manner by utilizing an organic solvent for the reaction which comprises an ether compound such as a monoether of a dihydric alcohol, a diether of a dihydric alcohol, or a cyclic diether.

Preparation of N-phenyl-N-alkylphenylenediamines

N,N'-dialkylphenylenediamines are prepared by the reductive alkylation of a nitroaniline and a ketone in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst. The desired product may be obtained in a more economical way when effecting the process in a continuous manner by utilizing an organic solvent comprising an ether compound such as a monoether of a dihydric alcohol, a diether of a dihydric alcohol, or a cyclic diether.

Preparation of N,N'-dialkylphenylenediamines

Unsaturated carbonyl compounds, and particularly .alpha.-substituted allylic carbonyl compounds as exemplified by 3-(1-methylallyl)-2,4-pentanedione are prepared by reacting a conjugated diolefinic compound with a compound possessing an active methylene group in the presence of certain catalytic compositions of matter at a temperature of from about -20.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. The desired products are useful as intermediates in preparing chemical compounds which possess desirable fragrances.

Preparation of unsaturated carbonyl compounds

The activity of a catalyst system comprising a salt of a noble metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table, a salt of copper, an organic acid and an oxygen-containing gas which is utilized in the vinylation of aromatic compounds may be enhanced by effecting the reaction in the presence of a compound containing an active methylene group.

Vinylation of aromatic compounds

Metal-containing catalyst compounds which are soluble in reaction mediums are maintained in the desired soluble form during an alternate oxidation and reduction process by utilizing an inert solid material in the reaction mixture.
