A system for providing location data for determining which service provide is to receive a location based telephone call from a wireless telephone set. A list of call routing parameters for a wireless telephone is generated from the location of a wireless telephone. Each call routing parameter is a location descriptor which indicates location of a caller. A switching system then read each calling parameter from the list and attempts to find a service provider to receive the call. The switching system repeats the process until a service provider is determined. The call is then extended to the service provider.

Extending a location based telephone call from a wireless telephone set using a generic routing list

The system of the invention passes wireless caller location information through the common channel signaling network (CCSN) to the PSAP such that the PSAP can provide enhanced emergency services. The caller location information such as the latitude and longitude of the wireless device or the cell and cell sector from which a call is made is encoded in the ISUP (ISDN User Part) of the call set up message over the CCSN. The public switched network routes the call based on the called party number (CDPN) parameter to the appropriate selective router and the selective router routes the call to the appropriate PSAP based on the caller location. The caller location information is transmitted over an ISDN interface to the PSAP. The PSAP can then access additional caller information based on the CDPN parameter to provide enhanced emergency services. Thus, the system of the invention allows enhanced 9-1-1 service to be provided in wireless systems while utilizing existing wireless infrastructure and protocols.

Enhanced emergency service for ISDN based emergency services in a wireless telecommunications system

Emergency service calls, such as 911 calls, are routed to specially trained operators at public service answering points (PSAPs). A PSAP switch, a special focus private branch exchange (PBX), is provided for interconnecting incoming PSAP calls to a PSAP position staffed by a PSAP operator. The PSAP position comprises a telephone facility for talking to the caller, and a PC for accessing and displaying data about the caller, i.e., the caller's address, and any special characteristics such as a caller's disability, etc. An ISDN, (Integrated Services Digital Network), line connects a tandem access switch used for routing PSAP calls with the PSAP switch. The ISDN facility is used for conveying information about the caller for display at the PC of the answering PSAP position. Advantageously, this arrangement provides an integrated system for communicating both the voice of the caller, and the data describing the caller to a PSAP operator.

Arrangement for public safety answering points

An arrangement for selectively routing traffic to alternate destinations. If the network or switch for accessing the primary destination is inaccessible (i.e., out of service), as opposed to simply being busy, calls are routed to an alternate destination; however, if the primary destination is simply busy, calls are not routed to any alternate destination. This is useful, for example, for emergency (E911) calls which are routed to alternate emergency bureaus only if the network or switch for accessing the home bureau is out of service. Alternatively, the tandem switch can select an alternate toll carrier on the basis of allocation of traffic to different alternate toll carriers. The same general kind of arrangement can be used to route calls to an alternate toll carrier if the preferred toll carrier selected by the customer is not accessible.
