Apparatus and processes for locating and processing QR codes or other Scannable Icons (SI's) in video or television signals. A number of client elements (which may correspond to users) may be in communication of one or more control elements; the client elements may be found in user set top boxes, digital video recorders or other equipment employed to receive video or television signals. The control elements may be found in software in server platforms or such user equipment. The client elements may locate and decode SI's according to various areas of interest of users. The control elements may control which client elements monitor various video or television signals; receive information related to decoded SI's; and report information to client elements so that (among other things) users can be aware of SI's in far more video or television signals than their own client elements are able to monitor.

Method for more efficient collecting of information

This invention enables Scanable Icons, which may be predetermined graphical images, and similar encoded information to be applied to video systems in a manner that is user-friendly and brings many of the advantages of easy information access and management to the video environment. The optical path normally required when using such encoded information is avoided. Supplementary information, including more details for advertisements, is provided in a non-invasive manner, allowing the user to access the supplementary information at convenient times and locations. The Scanable Icon adds a symbol to the existing advertisement without increasing its duration. Advertising is made substantially more effective for the advertiser and more useful for the consumer.

System for scanable icon detection and management

A system and a method for providing an additional audio content at the input of the car radio (or other radio receiver) by tracking the available channels. The invention provides an invasive and non-invasive way of adding dominant audio content source to the existing car audio systems.

Method and apparatus for masking program content

A system for transmitting digital programming includes a program source providing digital information, circuitry for modulating the digital information onto a visual carrier modulated with analog television programming, and a visual transmitter coupled to the modulating circuitry. Using a phase modulation method, the system phase modulates the digital information onto a visual carrier, reduces the baseband frequencies of the phase modulated visual carrier, and amplitude modulates the phase-modulated video carrier onto a video signal. The amplified and encoded video signal are combined with an amplified sound signal and transmitted. Using an additive method, the system modulates the sidebands of the video carrier with the digital information and amplitude modulates the video signal onto the video carrier. The data-modulated sidebands are phase-shifted such that they will be in quadrature with the amplitude-modulated video signal. The system combines the amplitude-modulated video carrier and the data-modulated quadrature sidebands. With a blended multiplicative/additive method, the system provides phase modulation and quadrature sideband addition to provide an optimized result.

Expanded information capacity for existing communication transmission systems

An enhanced scrambled video signal, method for making an enhanced scrambled video signal and apparatus for enhanced scrambling of a video signal are all characterized by a pattern added to a video signal. The pattern is formed from a pair of segments, including a black segment and a white segment which forms a high contrast transition therebetween. The transitions vary in horizontal location from one horizontal line to the next. The pattern causes an unauthorized television receiver to mistakenly lock onto the transitions in the pattern, as if the transitions represented horizontal sync signals, thus scrambling the video display. The apparatus for inserting the pattern may be formed by a sync detector, a video amplifier, a multiplexor and a control logic device. The video amplifier sets the video signal to a DC reference level. The sync detector detects the horizontal sync of the video signal which is sent from the video amplifier. The sync location is passed from the sync stripper to the control logic device which sends control pattern insertion signals to the multiplexor. The multiplexor combines the video signal with the black, white, and gray reference signals based on the control information to add the pattern to the video signal.

Enhanced scrambling of slowly changing video signals

A switching apparatus and method for routing RF scrambled signals. One of a plurality of scrambled RF television information signals is selected. A processor assigns an output carrier frequency. The selected scrambled television information signal is output by the switching apparatus on the assigned output carrier frequency. The plurality of scrambled RF television information signals is carried on an RF bus in the switching apparatus. The bus may consist of a plurality of cables. An RF switch connects a tuner to one of the cables. An amplifier is connected to the tuner. An amplitude information signal is decoded off the RF bus and is used for controlling gain of the amplifier. An up converter applies the output of the amplifier onto the assigned carrier frequency.

Switched channel system

An electrostatic probe device detects signals displayed on a cathode ray tube in a non-invasive manner. Specifically, the probe device includes a probe that is spaced from a fluorescent screen of a cathode ray tube by a dielectric material and a detection circuit coupled to probe. The detection circuit produces an output signal that corresponds to an input video signal supplied to the cathode ray tube. In a preferred embodiment, the probe is located directly on a face plate of the cathode ray tube, wherein the face plate acts as the dielectric material. Voltage fluctuations detected by the probe are equalized by the detection circuit. The detection circuit may also include amplification and inverter circuits, so that the output of the detection circuit can be supplied to a monitor for viewing. The image displayed on the monitor directly corresponds to the image displayed on the cathode ray tube.

A method and apparatus for securing a television transmission signal from unauthorized reception is disclosed that employs a sideband interdiction technique. A portion of the signal's sideband content is enhanced such that the signal is rendered useless for reception. The signal is decoded by passing the signal through a passive all-pass delay-equalizer network at the site of the receiver.

Method and apparatus for securing television signals using sideband

An enclosure, including an automatic television signal switch, has four coaxial cable connectors, a first for bringing in an input television signal, a second and a third for supplying signals to and from a decoder, and a fourth for supplying television signals to a television receiver. A signal splitter is connected to the first connector and supplies one television signal to a decoder via the second connector and another television signal to a first stationary contact of a relay. The second relay stationary contact is connected to the third connector which receives decoded signals from the decoder. The movable contact of the relay is connected to the fourth connector. The relay is powered by an internal DC power supply that is connected via a line cord and plug to a switched AC power outlet on the decoder. Turning the decoder on automatically energizes the relay to pass input the television signal to the decoder. When the decoder is off, the relay bypasses the decoder and passes input television signals directly to the television receiver.
