A communication system includes multiple network interfaces interconnected using synchronous transport resources, such as a SONET ring. These interfaces couple to various communications networks and provide access for these networks to the synchronous transport resources. In response to relatively simple commands, these interfaces may couple attached asynchronous networks to the synchronous transport resources. With appropriate messages communicated to two of these interfaces, this system provides for the provisioning of synchronous transport resources between two asynchronous networks to support network-to-network communications.

Provisioning synchronous transport resources for asynchronous traffic

In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a network element comprises a first subsystem operable to receive management transactions in a first management protocol and to map the transactions to a common management protocol. A second subsystem is operable to receive management transactions in a second management protocol and to map the transactions to the common management protocol. A common management information base (MIB) includes a dataset and a common interface to the dataset. The common interface is operable to access the dataset to process transactions received from the first and second subsystems in the common management protocol.

Method and system for managing multiple management protocols in a network element

A method for protecting virtual channel connection (VCC) traffic in a telecommunications system includes receiving a virtual path connection (VPC) at a destination node. The virtual path connection (VPC) is received on each of a working transmission link and a protection transmission link. The virtual path connection (VPC) includes a plurality of virtual channel connections (VCCs) A protection switching status is received for the working and protection transmission links. The virtual channel connections (VCCs) are selected from the working and protection transmission links for processing by selecting the virtual path connection (VPC) from one of the working and protection links based on the protection switching status for at least one of the working and protection transmission links.

Protection architecture for virtual channel connections (VCCS) in a telecommunications network

A system for downloading a software image to a SONET network element which eliminates the need for a separate overhead channel for this purpose. The system conveys the software image using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) over the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), over the Internet Protocol (IP), using ATM. The disclosed system enables ATM cells carrying the software image to be received over a SONET ring connected to the device. The disclosed system uses permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) between network elements over which the software image may be transported. In a first embodiment, the PVCs form a star of logical connections with remote network elements to which software image files may be downloaded from a &ldquo;gateway&rdquo; network element. The gateway network element is a network element communicative with a central management station, which provides data to be downloaded to the remote network elements. In an alternative embodiment, the PVCs used to transport the software image connect adjacent network elements to the gateway network element. Those network elements adjacent to the gateway network element in turn have PVCs to their adjacent network elements. Thus, in the alternative embodiment, the software image file is forwarded hop by hop across multiple PVCs until it reaches the destination network element in which it is to be loaded for execution.
