Novel polyimides and molding compositions are prepared from novel tricyclo[4.2.1.0.sup.2,5 ] nonane-3,4-dimethyl-3,4,7,8-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. The dianhydride is useful for the manufacture of polyimides which are useful as engineering plastics.

Novel polyimides, copolyimides and molding compositions are prepared from novel dianhydrides such as bicyclo[4.2.0]octane-2,5 diphenyl-7,8-dimethyl,3,4,7,8-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and bicyclo[4.2.0] octane-7,8-dimethyl-3,4,7,8-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. The novel polyimides are useful as engineering plastics. The novel dianhydrides are useful for the preparation of the polyimides.

This invention relates to copolyimides-polyamides prepared from mixtures of tetramethylcyclobutane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (TMCDA), aromatic or aliphatic dianhydrides, and dicarboxylic acids or their esters or acid chlorides.
