A fuel filter comprises a filter screen, a heating element, and a coating. The filter screen includes a first hollow member. The heating element is disposed within the first hollow member. The coating is formed of a thermally conductive, electrically insulating ceramic in a hydrodynamic filtering pattern surrounding the filter screen but having a different shape than a shape of the hollow member.

A filter includes an outlet from a container, the outlet transverse to said inlet and a filter screen within the container that partially surrounds the outlet. In a further embodiment of the foregoing embodiment, the filter screen prevents passage of particles greater in size than 40 to 6000 microns. In a further embodiment of any of the foregoing embodiments, the filter screen provides a pressure drop of less than 0.5 psi. In a further embodiment of any of the foregoing embodiments, the filter screen defines a tortuous path with a bypass there around. In a further embodiment of any of the foregoing embodiments, the filter screen is cylindrical and extends parallel to a length of said container.

A heating body for an electrically heated filter screen includes a heater element having an outer surface and a metallic protective layer having an inner surface. An insulating layer is disposed between the heater element outer surface and the inner surface of the metallic layer. The metallic layer and an exposed portion of the insulating layer define an exterior of the heating body. An electrically heated filter screen constructed from pairs of intersecting heating bodies is also described.
