A radio frequency (RF) multistage receiving coil assembly for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system is provided. The RF multistage receiving coil assembly includes a plurality of RF coils, wherein each RF coil of the plurality of RF coils includes a plurality of flexible loops having a malleable conductor. The RF multistage receiving coil also includes a plurality of flexible enclosures, wherein a respective RF coil of the plurality of RF coils is disposed within a respective flexible enclosure of the plurality of flexible enclosures. The RF multistage receiving coil assembly is configured to be adjusted and disposed about an extremity of a subject to enable functional imaging of the extremity with the MRI system.

A radio frequency (RF) receiving coil assembly for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system includes a plurality of loops. The RF receiving coil assembly also includes a plurality of electronics units, wherein a respective electronics unit of the plurality of electronics units is coupled to a respective loop of the plurality of loops, wherein each respective electronics unit includes circuitry configured to measure a temperature of the respective loop and to regulate power provided to the respective loop based on the temperature of the respective loop.

Various methods and systems are provided for radio frequency (RF) coils for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In one embodiment, an RF coil assembly for an MRI system includes a posterior end including a first set of flexible RF coils; an anterior end including a second set of flexible RF coils; a central section extending between the posterior end and anterior end, wherein the posterior end and the anterior end are bendable to the central section. Each flexible RF coil of the first set and second set of flexible RF coils includes a loop portion comprising a coupling electronics portion and at least two parallel, distributed capacitance wire conductors encapsulated and separated by a dielectric material.

An apparatus for decoupling a receive coil from a transmit coil includes a tuning circuit connected electrically with the receive coil and a MEMS switch connected electrically in parallel with the tuning circuit, and operable to line up or to bypass the tuning circuit by opening or closing the MEMS switch. The apparatus further includes a control circuit operatively connected with the MEMS switch and operable to open or to close the MEMS within a window of time responsive to energization of the transmit coil to transmit a signal.
