A communications system () includes a resource controller () and a terminal () in communication with the resource controller (). Periodically, the resource controller () sends a service announcement () that identifies a set () of timeslots () within a communication resource () configured for random access within a future frame (). The terminal () ascertains a burst characteristic () of a message () to be sent from the terminal () and generates a random access parameter (). Random access slot selection in a communications system

A base station () provides service in a satellite communications (SATCOM) system () to a terminal (). The SATCOM system () operates in accordance with a first standard (), and the terminal () is unable to communicate in accordance with the first standard (). Methodology entails receiving, at a SATCOM resource controller (), a request () for a satellite resource () from the base station (). The satellite resource () is allocated to the base station () and the controller () sends a message () with the allocated satellite resource (). The base station () applies a second standard (), defining a specific set of functional and performance characteristics, to the satellite resource (). The terminal () is enabled to perform satellite communications in accordance with the second standard () using the satellite resource ().

Providing service in a satellite communications system to disadvantaged terminals

Utility consumption data is provided over power line carrier links to local nodes and routed through a network of local nodes over peer-to-peer line-of-sight RF links to a utility service provider. Backhauler nodes combine the utility consumption data from the local nodes within a coverage region for routing to the utility service provider. Consumer nodes include sensing elements for measuring the utility consumption data, and switching elements for connecting or disconnecting the utility from a consumer location. Messages are sent through the network requesting the utility consumption data and for activating the switching elements.

Data transfer system and method for communicating utility consumption data over power line carriers

A secure, portable position locating radio has a geolocation receiver providing local position and timing information from geolocation means (e.g. GPS satellites) and a local transceiver for sending local position information to a communication system (e.g., an airborne or orbiting transceiver). A crypto unit is provided between the receiver and local transceiver for encrypting the local position information prior to transmission. A data processor coupled to the local transceiver, receiver and crypto unit controls operation of the device, including storing local position information and separating signals broadcast by the communication system into those intended or not intended for the device. An external interface and display and a real-time clock (e.g., slaved to the GPS receiver) are also coupled to the data processor. Encryption keys and message abbreviation codes are conveniently loaded into the device from a demountable accessory unit at the interface, and stored therein.

Position locating rescue transceiver

A method for organizing a communication system with automatic handoff. The method includes steps of: (i) sending a message from a first remote unit to a monitoring site during a specific time slot within a frame of time slots, wherein the first remote unit has a unique identification code and the message includes the unique identification code from the first remote unit; (ii) relaying the message including the identification code from the monitoring site to a central authority during a reserved time slot within the frame, the reserved time slot reserved for the relaying step; (iii) transmitting an acknowledgment message from the central authority to the monitoring site, wherein the monitoring site is determined from an updated lookup table of communications links between monitoring sites and remote units, during a time slot reserved for the acknowledgment message; and (iv) retransmitting the acknowledgment message from the monitoring site to the remote unit.
