There are provided a carbon black according to which long-term stable storage is possible, clogging is not prone to occurring, and the OD value is high and hence printing with a deep black color is possible, or a carbon black that can be used in a water-based ink that is used in ink jet printer printing, that has low settleability and can thus be stored stably for a long period, for which clogging is not prone to occurring, and for which the reflection density is high and hence printing with a high printing density and a deep black color is possible, a carbon black dispersion having the carbon black dispersed therein, and a water-based ink containing the carbon black. An embodiment of a modified carbon black of the present invention is a modified carbon black obtained by carrying out oxidation treatment on a carbon black having a primary particle diameter of 11 to 18 nm, a BET specific surface area of at least 180 m/g, a DBP oil absorption of at least 180 mL/100 g, and a value of the BET specific surface area (m/g) divided by the DBP oil absorption (mL/100 g) of 0.75 to 1.3, and is characterized in that at least lactone groups and carboxyl groups are introduced onto the surface thereof, and the ratio of the mean particle diameter to the primary particle diameter is at least 8.5. Moreover, a carbon black dispersion and a water-based ink of the present invention contain this modified carbon black.

The present invention provides a water-based ink that is used in ink jet printer printing, with a writing instrument, or the like, that has a low settling rate and for which clogging is not prone to occurring, that can be stored stably for a long period without the viscosity or the carbon black particle diameter increasing, and for which printing with a deep black color and a high print density is possible, and a modified carbon black dispersion used for preparing this water-based ink. The present invention is a liquid having dispersed therein a modified carbon black obtained by subjecting a carbon black raw material powder to oxidation treatment, wherein the modified carbon black has on the surface thereof (a) carboxyl groups, and (b) lactone groups in a molar amount of at least 500 &#x3bc;mol/g relative to the weight of the modified carbon black and a molar ratio of 0.8 to 1.1 times the amount of the carboxyl groups.

It is provided an aqueous pigment dispersion having improved dispersing stability in which carbon black shows appropriate initial dispersing property and long-term dispersing property to water, and carbon black particles are less susceptible to aggregation. Moreover, it is provided a raw material for ink-jet ink having improved printing density when alkali metal cation is substituted by potassium ion. The present invention is summarized as an aqueous pigment dispersion, which contains surface modified carbon black that is obtained by wet-oxidizing carbon black by using hypohalous acid and/or a salt thereof, and alkali metal cation, characterized in that concentration of the alkali metal cation is not more than 2% by weight.

A disazo dye composition comprising at least a disazo dye represented by the formula (I) and a disazo dye represented by the formula (II): ##STR1## (wherein X and Y indicate an alkoxy group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and M indicates hydrogen or a cation selected from the group consisting of, alkaline metal, NH.sub.4, alkyl-substituted ammonium, alkanolammonium, morpholinium and piperidinium), wherein, when the disazo dye composition is analyzed by liquid chromatography, the area ratio of the peak area (Sp) of the disazo dye represented by the formula (I) to the peak area (Sc) of the disazo dye represented by the formula (II), that is Sp:Sc is from 1:0.4 to 1:2.4. This disazo dye composition provides a high quality image, rapid ink fixing and the like even on the plain paper.

According to the present invention, there was provided a non-pollutive ink composition using alcohol or glycol ether as a solvent. The ink composition has excellent stability against an environmental change such as a temperature change, a humidity change, etc., and storage stability in comparison with a conventional salt-formed type dye. Further, the written ink has excellent water resistance and light resistance. It can be used as various quick-drying black dye ink compositions such as writing ink, (industrial) ink-jet printing ink, stamp ink, etc.

An ink composition is provided which enables high-quality recording on plain paper and can record an image having excellent water resistance. The present invention provides a disazo salt-forming dye having excellent solubility with organic solvents, especially alcohols and glycols. The present invention thus provides a disazo salt-forming dye represented by the Formula (I): ##STR1## or the Formula (II): ##STR2## wherein Ka.sup.+ represents a cation of an amine which is substituted with at least one linear or cyclic alkyl group or aralkyl group having 6-12 carbon atoms which may be branched or interrupted by oxygen.

The present invention provides a trisazo dye represented by the formula: ##STR1## [wherein A is a phenyl group substituted with at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of an amino group, a substituted amino group and a hydroxyl group, B is a substituted or non-substituted phenyl group, X is a group of the formula: ##STR2## Q is a group of the formula: ##STR3## (wherein n is 1 or 2), and M is hydrogen, alkali metal, aliphatic alkyl ammonium or alkanol ammonium].
