A glass roll includes a glass film formed by a downdraw method. The glass film is wound into a roll using a winding roller in a state in which front and back glass surfaces of the glass film formed in the forming operation are exposed, and during the winding operation, the glass film is superposed on a separable protective sheet. The protective sheet extends beyond both sides in a width direction of the glass film. The protective sheet can further be wound on an outer peripheral surface of the glass film by winding only the protective sheet from a trailing end of the glass film in a winding direction of the glass film.

A glass roll reliably prevents a glass film from breaking from an end surface of the glass film as an origin of breakage. The glass roll is formed by winding the glass film into a roll while superposing the glass film on a protective sheet. The glass film is formed by an overflow downdraw method to have a thickness of 1 &#x3bc;m or more and 200 &#x3bc;m or less, and has each end surface in a width direction formed as a cut surface cut by laser splitting.

An emission gas treatment apparatus recovers a recycle feed containing boron from emission gas discharged by a glass melting furnace. The apparatus includes a collection device for collecting a component containing boron from the emission gas by a wet process to obtain a collected liquid, a first filter for separating the collected liquid into a solid and a liquid, and an ion-exchange resin for forming a boron solution by removing an impurity from an extracted liquid obtained in the first filter. The apparatus also includes a mixing tank for mixing an extracted solid obtained in the first filter in the boron solution to form an extracted solid-containing solution, a second filter for separating the extracted solid-containing solution into a solid and a liquid, and a vacuum dryer for recovering the recycle feed from an extracted solid obtained in the second filter.

A manufacturing method for a glass roll includes forming a glass film by a downdraw method, winding the glass film into a roll using a winding roller in a state in which front and back glass surfaces of the glass film formed in said forming operation are exposed, and during said winding operation, superposing the glass film on a separable protective sheet. A glass for a display substrate composed of 50 to 70% SiO, 10 to 25% AlO, 8.4 to 20% BO, 0 to 10% MgO, 6 to 15% CaO, 0 to 10% BaO, 0 to 10% SrO, 0 to 10% ZnO, 0 to 5% TiO, 0 to 5% PO, 0.01 to 0.2% alkali metal, and from 0.01% to less than 0.4% ZrO, as expressed in % by mass. The invention provides an alkali-free glass substrate small in the variation of the thermal shrinkage and a process for producing the same. An alkali-free glass substrate of the invention has an absolute value of a thermal shrinkage of 50 ppm or more when the alkali-free glass substrate is heated at a rate of 10&#xb0; C./min from a room temperature, kept at a holding temperature of 450&#xb0; C. for 10 hr and then cooled at a rate of 10&#xb0; C./min.

A molten glass supply device is provided, which can solve unavoidable problems for high viscosity characteristics in connection with the conventional molten glass supply device for high viscosity glass. The supply pressure of the molten glass is equalized when molten glass is distributed from the distribution portion to the branch paths. The distribution portion has a shallower bottom than the melting furnace.
