A ferrule of the present invention includes a positioning mechanism for positioning an optical fiber, and a recess having at least a first inner wall for allowing a front end of the optical fiber portion positioned by the positioning mechanism to protrude, and a second inner wall opposite to the first inner wall. A distance between the first inner wall and the second inner wall is less than or equal to four times the outer diameter of the optical fiber. Adhesive is filled into the recess and cured in a state in which the optical fiber protrudes from the first inner wall and substantially contacts the second inner wall to fix the optical fiber.

An optical path changing member is assembled at ends of optical fibers and placed to face a substrate including an optical input/output terminal having optical axes inclined with respect to optical axes of the ends. The optical path changing member is made of a transparent material and includes a member body having a reflection surface for optically connecting the ends to the optical input/output terminal. The member body has optical fiber insertion holes and an end placement portion to which the insertion holes are open and in which the end faces of the optical fibers are placed. The reflection surface is formed so that light entering from the end faces of the optical fibers into the member body will be internally reflected toward the optical input/output terminal in the member body. The end placement portion is filled with an adhesive by which the ends are fixed to the member body.

An optical connector of a fitting pin positioning type includes multiple optical fiber insertion holes arranged in one row and fitting holes or fitting pins. The fitting holes or the fitting pins for positioning are respectively disposed on mutually opposite sides of a straight line connecting centers of the optical fiber insertion holes and are located point-symmetrically with respect to a center of the row of the entire optical fiber insertion holes arranged on the straight line.

A multifiber optical connector is provided comprising: a ferrule including a junction-end-face and a plurality of optical-fiber-insertion holes which open in the junction-end-face; openings of the optical-fiber-insertion holes arranged on the junction-end-face in a line or row or in plural parallel lines or rows; and optical fibers received in the optical-fiber-insertion holes such that they protrude from the junction-end-face. The lengths of optical fibers disposed on both side portions of the junction-end-face are greater than the lengths of optical fibers disposed on a central portion of the junction-end-face.
