An image forming system and apparatus are provided which utilizes a portable terminal such as a cellular phone when printing and outputting map data, etc. On a network by separating the operation through the cellular phones from the operation through a terminal printer. The system includes a portable terminal that is connected to a network via a gateway through radio communication and provides a desired map destination data to a server. The server receives the destination data via the network and stores the destination data in a prescribed area. A printer that is connected to the server provides its position data to the server and receives a map data comprising the position data of the printer as a starting point and the destination data as an ending point and prints this map data.

The hierarchy of an operation screen of a digital PPC (scanner device) used as an image fetching device is set to correspond to the hierarchy of a directory in a file server for recording a scanned image file. That is, the hierarchy of the operation screen and the hierarchy of the directory are set to have a correspondence relation with respect to each other and changing points of the respective hierarchies reflect on the opposite hierarchies.

A division/coupling process section refers to item 'DOCUMENT PROCESS' in a division/coupling set information DB. If a document division/coupling process needs to be executed, division/coupling set information from the division/coupling set information DB is referred to. If scan parameters need to be referred to, the division/coupling process section refers to scan parameters from a scan parameter DB. If an inquire process needs to be executed by referring to item 'EXCESS DOCUMENT PROCESS' in the division/coupling set information DB, necessary information is acquired from an input/output section through a division/coupling inquire process section. Thus, the document division/coupling is determined and executed. The present invention employs an instruction button for inputting an instruction to simultaneously executing registration, in a full-text-search database, of a document scanned by one scanning operation and subjected to OCR processing, and registration of the document in a designated folder contained in a database of a folder tree structure. This single instruction button enables the user to simultaneously register read images in a folder, and text data resulting from OCR processing executed on the read images.

A digital copying machine provided with both a scanner function and a printer function is used. The use of this type of machine enables a scanner apparatus to have a printout function as well. An input image can be transmitted to a final registration destination or a transfer destination and printed by operating only the scanner apparatus. Owing to this feature, the user need not check the image output to the final registration destination, the user is only required to confirm the printed image. Hence, the burden imposed on the user by the confirmation of captured images is significantly reduced.

Image processing apparatus

User information is acquired from a portable device and setting information of the user is acquired from a server based on the user information from the portable device to customize settings for each user. As a result, a digital copying machine having a user interface which is set to be easily customized for a user is provided.

When a recording medium is set in a slot of a CD-ROM drive, a DVD drive or a smart media drive, a system control section of a printing apparatus controls a display control section to cause a display panel to display selection items. When one of the selection items displayed on the display panel is selected by pushing, and a 'PRINT' button is also pushed, the system control section acquires information on the selected item associated with the recording medium from a server apparatus and controls a print control section to execute a printing control.

A user prepares a registration destination database, a title and field map information with respect to a transfer profile. The right of access to the database by the user is confirmed. A transfer profile is registered in a transfer profile setting section. Subsequently, an operation button function setting section of a digital scanner is activated, and a transfer profile name applied to an operation button is selected. A user name as a registrant, a format of attachment of a document image, an image format at a time of document registration are set. A display icon of the operation button and a button name are input, and the operation button is registered in an operation button management database.
