A head-up display device includes: a display unit that produces a display light for the left eye by modulating a first illumination light derived from superimposing first illumination light beams output from a first region of a fly eye lens and produces a display light for the right eye by modulating a second illumination light derived from superimposing second illumination light beams output a second region of the fly eye lens; and an image processing unit that produces an image for the left eye and produces an image for the right eye; and a display control unit that causes a display unit to display the image for the left eye when the first illumination light is produced and causes the display unit to display the image for the right eye when the second illumination light is produced.

Head-up display device

A virtual image display device presents a virtual image to a user via a virtual image presentation plate. The virtual image display device includes a display unit that generates an image display light; a concave mirror that reflects the image display light and projects the image display light toward the virtual image presentation plate; and a driving mechanism that changes an orientation of the concave mirror to change an incidence angle of the image display light on the concave mirror and change a distance a from the concave mirror to the display unit in accordance with the orientation of the concave mirror.

Virtual image display device

The liquid crystal illumination device includes a light source projecting light to a liquid crystal panel, a first diffusion unit diffusing the projected light, a first light guide unit including a radially widened reflection surface and reflect the diffused light at the reflection surface, a reflecting mirror including an opening, part of the light guided by the first light guide unit being reflected and returned to inside the first light guide unit, and remaining light passing through the opening, a light collecting unit collecting light passing through an opening on the reflecting mirror, and a second diffusion unit diffusing the collected light toward the liquid crystal panel. The opening on the reflecting mirror is formed correspondingly to a display region where the liquid crystal panel display an image. A haze value of the first diffusion unit is set to a value higher than that of the second diffusion unit.

Liquid crystal illumination device, head up display, and illumination method

An image display device includes: a light source that emits a beam having a spreading angle in a first direction and a spreading angle in a second direction, which is smaller than the spreading angle in the first direction, in a direction perpendicular to the first direction; an afocal optical system member that has a focal point and changes the beam emitted by the light source into a parallel beam; an anisotropic diffusion plate that is arranged at the focal point and that widens at least the spreading angle in the second direction; a vibration unit that vibrates the anisotropic diffusion plate; a fly-eye lens array on which the parallel beam emitted from the afocal optical system member becomes incident; an image display element that modulates the beam that has passed through the fly-eye lens array into image display light.

Image display device

A beam, expansion unit is configured to expand a beam of laser light emitted from a laser light source into an ellipse. A beam irradiation position moving unit is configured to translate a mirror by a driving unit to sequentially move the laser light expanded into the ellipse on the surface of an integrator in a minor-axis direction of the ellipse. A reflective liquid crystal device is configured to modulate the laser light. A projection lens is configured to project the laser light modulated by the reflective liquid crystal device.

Projection-type display apparatus having a laser light source

An image display device includes: an image generation unit that generates image display light based on an image signal; a projection unit that projects the image display light generated by the image generation unit; a combiner that presents the image display light projected by the projection unit as a virtual image; and a rotating unit that rotationally moves the combiner along at least one rotation surface, wherein the projection unit changes a direction in which the image display light is projected based on the rotational movement of the combiner.

An integrator includes a plurality of rectangular lens cells arranged in a direction x and a direction y. Laser light emitted from a laser source is projected onto an integrator. A beam irradiation position moving unit is configured to cause the laser light to scan the surface of the integrator in the directions x and y so that the laser light is sequentially projected onto a plurality of lens cells. A reflective liquid crystal device is configured to modulate the laser light emitted from the integrator. A projection lens is configured to project the laser light modulated by the reflective liquid crystal device.

Projection-type display apparatus

A first linearly polarized bundle of rays of incident rays is converted by optical modulation with an input video signal into a second linearly polarized bundle of rays orthogonal to the first rays in polarization. The first rays pass through a polarizer before optically modulated. A second linearly polarized bundle of rays originally involved in the incident rays is reflected by the polarizer in a first direction. The second rays obtained by the optical modulation are reflected by the polarizer in a second direction. The second rays reflected in the second direction pass through another polarizer. A first linearly polarized bundle of rays involved in the reflected second rays is reflected by the other polarizer. The reflected first rays is detected by an optical sensor that is positioned outside an optical path of the second rays originally involved in the incident rays and reflected in the first direction.

Light modulator, projection display apparatus and image projection method

A light source apparatus according to one embodiment of the present invention is comprised of a light emitting tube having a first electrode in one end and a second electrode in the other end thereof, the tube having both ends closed, a concave-shaped reflector having a hole in its deepest portion, the hole being provided for holding the light emitting tube, a transparent glass plate covering an opening of the reflector, a lead wire whose ends connects to the second electrode and extends out through a hole formed on a side surface of the reflector, respectively, a cooling fan blowing cooling air toward the reflector, and an air guiding member that separates the cooling air from the fan into a first cooling air cooling an outer surface of the reflector and a second cooling air cooling the other end of the lead wire extending out from the reflector.

Light source apparatus and an image display apparatus

A liquid crystal displaying apparatus has a reflection-type liquid crystal display with vertical orientation-mode liquid crystals, to modulate linearly polarized light. Also provided is a polarization and diffracting section to convert read light beams obliquely incident thereto to the linearly polarized light, to allow the linearly polarized light to be incident to the liquid crystal display, allow first polarized light components of the linearly polarized light modulated by the liquid crystal display to pass therethrough, the first polarized light components vibrating in a first direction perpendicular to a second direction in which the linearly polarized light vibrates, and diffract second polarized light components of the linearly polarized light to a third direction from which the read light beams be incident to the liquid crystal display, the second polarized light components vibrating in the second direction. Further provided are a quarter wavelength plate to allow elliptically polarized light which includes the first polarized light components and a small quantity of the second polarized light components to pass therethrough when the liquid crystal display is active for modulation, and a polarizer to allow polarized light components of the elliptically polarized light to pass therethrough, the polarized light components matching a transmission axis of the polarizer.

Reflection-type liquid crystal displaying apparatus

A spatial light modulator and a lighting system used in, for example, projection displays are provided. The lighting system has a polarizing plate optically disposed in parallel to a light modulating layer of the spatial light modulator, thereby orienting the polarization of readout light beams incident on the spatial light modulator in the same direction to increase the contrast of images projected on a screen. The spatial light modulator is provided with a coupling prism having a side surface opposed to an entrance surface on which the readout light beams are incident. The side surface is so inclined inward as to allow stray light in the coupling prism to go out of the coupling prism without being reflected, thereby eliminating a decrease in contrast of images with a screen caused by the stray light.

Structure of spatial light modulator and lighting system therefor

In an illumination device used for a color image projector, indefinitely polarized light beams from a light source are separated by a polarization beam splitter into two linearly polarized light beams respectively having polarized planes perpendicularly intersecting to each other. One of the two polarized light beams is made to have the same polarized plane as that of the other by a 1/2.lambda. wave-plate. Second and third lens arrays are respectively placed at positions where an optical distance from a first lens array to the second lens array is the same as that from the first lens array to the third lens array. Principal rays of luminous fluxes outputted from microlenses of the second and third lens arrays are made to be parallel to each other and to a superimposing lens. The illumination light outputted from the superimposing lens illuminates a display device in a telecentric optical system using optically a visual field lens. The illumination light has a large cone angle in a diffraction direction of a hologram color filter provided on an LCD display device compared with that in a direction perpendicular to the diffraction direction.

Image projector and illumination device used for the image projector

A reflective type active matrix display panel having pixel electrodes formed on a substrate is manufactured as follows: an insulating film is formed all over the substrate including the pixel electrodes; the surface of the insulating film is planarized by use of a polishing material including an etchant for etching the insulating film; and a reflective layer and a liquid crystal layer are formed on the planarized insulating film. The surfaces of the pixel electrodes are also planarized to have only the liquid crystal layer formed on the planarized pixel electrodes. The display panel has pixel transistors arranged into a matrix pattern on the substrate. Connected to the transistors are pixel electrodes and wirings arranged into a matrix pattern Signals are applied to the pixel electrodes via the wirings. The transistors, pixel electrodes, and wirings are provided in a display pixel area on the substrate. The display panel also has drive circuits for scanning the signals, formed around the display pixel area.
