A surface-treated steel sheet for battery cases is provided which comprises a nickel-cobalt alloy layer formed at the outermost surface of a plane to be an inner surface of a battery case, wherein a Co/Ni value at the surface of the nickel-cobalt alloy layer is within a range of 0.1 to 1.5 as determined by Auger electron spectroscopy analysis.

A surface-treated steel sheet for battery containers is provided. The surface-treated sheet is used to form a battery container for a battery. The battery uses a nonaqueous electrolytic solution as an electrolytic solution. The surface-treated steel sheet includes a base material made of steel and an iron-nickel diffusion layer formed by performing thermal diffusion treatment after forming a nickel plating layer at least on a surface of the base material to be located at the inner surface side of the battery container. The iron-nickel diffusion layer has an outermost layer of which a ratio of Ni and Fe is 7.5 or less as a molar ratio of Ni/Fe. The iron-nickel diffusion layer has a thickness of 0.6 &#x3bc;m or more.

There is provided a surface-treated steel sheet for battery containers. The surface-treated sheet is used to form a battery container for a battery. The battery uses a nonaqueous electrolytic solution as an electrolytic solution. The surface-treated steel sheet is characterized by the features as below. The surface-treated steel sheet includes a base material made of steel and an iron-nickel diffusion layer formed by performing thermal diffusion treatment after forming a nickel plating layer at least on a surface of the base material to be located at the inner surface side of the battery container. The iron-nickel diffusion layer has an outermost layer of which a ratio of Ni and Fe is 7.5 or less as a molar ratio of Ni/Fe. The iron-nickel diffusion layer has a thickness of 0.6 &#x3bc;m or more.

A steel sheet for manufacturing a pipe having excellent corrosion resistance against fuel vapor has a Zn&#x2014;Ni alloy layer on at least an uppermost surface of a surface thereof which constitutes an inner surface of the pipe, and a nickel content in the Zn&#x2014;Ni alloy layer is 4 to 16 at %.

A surface-treated steel sheet for battery cases is provided which comprises a nickel-cobalt alloy layer formed at the outermost surface of a plane to be an inner surface of a battery case. When X-ray diffraction measurement using CuK&#x3b1; as a radiation source is performed for the nickel-cobalt alloy layer, an intensity ratio I/I=0.01 to 0.9. The intensity ratio I/Iis a ratio of an intensity Iof a peak present at a diffraction angle 2&#x3b8; within a range of 41&#xb0; or more and less than 43&#xb0; to an intensity Iof a peak present at a diffraction angle 2&#x3b8; within a range of 43&#xb0; or more and 45&#xb0; or less.

A battery can of the present invention ensures a stable and favorable contact with an electrode and thus makes it possible to obtain a highly reliable battery excellent in high rate discharge characteristics. The battery can having an opening, including a cylindrical side portion and a bottom portion, of the present invention is formed from a steel plate. The steel plate has an Ni&#x2014;Fe alloy layer on the inner face side of the battery can. The Ni&#x2014;Fe alloy layer has an oxide layer containing iron and having a thickness of 10 to 50 nm on the inner face side of the battery can.

Battery can and method for manufacturing the same

A battery case excellent in glossiness of appearance and working efficiency and a surface-plated steel plate which can be used preferably to manufacture the battery case. The battery case is produced by deep-drawing, DI-forming, DTR-forming a surface-treated steel plate having glossy nickel or glossy nickel-cobalt alloy plating on the outermost layer corresponding to the external face of a battery case of a plated original plate consisting of a steel plate. The glossy nickel plating or glossy nickel-cobalt alloy plating layer on the outermost layer has a high glossiness, and therefore the appearance is excellent. The runnability of a formed battery case is high as well as the working efficiency.

A purpose of the present invention is to provide a surface treated steel sheet for a battery container having an excellent anti-alkaline characteristic and a performance for maintaining a discharging level for a long time, a battery container and a product method thereof. In the present invention, after forming a nickel-bismuth alloy layer on a steel sheet, the steel sheet is thermally treated at 300&deg; C. to 650&deg; C. in an inactive gas or a deoxidizing gas for 240 to 600 min so that an iron-nickel diffused layer and nickel-bismuth diffused layer are formed at each boundary surface. A battery is produced by utilizing a battery container made of a steel sheet on which one or more than layers selected from a group of an iron-nickel diffused layer, a nickel layer, a nickel-bismuth diffused layer, an iron-nickel-bismuth alloy layer is formed on the steel sheet.
