The first substrate unit includes a first substrate, first and second electrodes, an extraction electrode, and a dielectric material layer. The second substrate unit includes a second substrate and a third electrode. The liquid crystal layer is provided between the first and second substrates. The first electrodes are provided on the first substrate to extend in a first direction. The second electrodes are provided on the first substrate and extend along the first direction. The extraction electrode is for electrically connecting the second electrodes. The third electrode is provided on the second substrate to extend in a second direction intersecting the first direction.

Three-dimensional image display apparatus for displaying three-dimensional image

A stereoscopic image display apparatus according an embodiment includes: an elemental image display unit having a display face in which pixels having sub-pixels are arranged in a matrix form, the display face being divided into a plurality of elemental images for display; and an optical plate provided on a viewer side of the elemental image display unit, the optical plate having a plurality of lenses arranged periodically with respect to the display face to be respectively associated with the plurality of elemental images, each of the lenses controlling light rays from the pixels which display an associated elemental image. In each lens, the sub-pixels which display an elemental image associated with the lens differing in isolation degree between adjacent sub-pixels depending upon whether a location is in a central portion of the lens or in a peripheral portion of the lens.

Certain embodiments provide a display device a plurality of subpixels arranged in a first direction and a second direction perpendicular to the first direction to form a matrix, and each having an aperture provided with a color component; and an optical controller provided to be opposed to the display device having a plurality of rectilinear optical apertures extending in the second direction are arranged in the first direction. A shape of the aperture in the subpixel is depending upon a condition that the apertures in the subpixels adjacent to each other in the first direction have a nonoverlapping region which is a nonoverlapping region in the second direction and a condition that an aperture ratio indicating a ratio of the aperture to the subpixel in length in the second direction is substantially constant in one line in the second direction irrespective of a position in the first direction.

When displaying one of a three-dimensional image and a two-dimensional image on a background and displaying the other image in a window, a flag bit indicating whether the first and second electrodes overlap the window is set. Waveforms differing according to the flag bit are applied to the first and second electrodes as pulses applied to the opposed first and second electrodes of a variable polarization cell. Structure of stereoscopic image data, stereoscopic image data recording method, reproducing method, recording program, and reproducing program

A three-dimensional image display apparatus displays element images each composed of a set of parallax component images. An exit pupil array is located opposite the display surface. Exit pupils of the array correspond to the respective element images. The horizontal pitch of the exit pupils or an integral multiple of the horizontal pitch is set equal or slightly smaller than an integral multiple of the horizontal pitch of pixels. The parallax component images are oriented in different directions via the exit pupil. Principal beams from the parallax component images via the exit pupils are emitted substantially parallel to one another.
