According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a plurality of magnetic disks including a first recording surface and a second recording surface, a first magnetic head that writes data to the first recording surface, a second magnetic head that writes data to the second recording surface and a controller that includes a counter configured to detect the number of writes of each of the first magnetic head and the second magnetic head, an unwritten detection unit configured to detect an unwritten block from the blocks, and a memory configured to store a first threshold for the number of writes of each of the first magnetic head and the second magnetic head and a second threshold less than or equal to the first threshold.

A controller provides a plurality of first sections with numerical information on a first scale. The plurality of first sections are obtained by dividing a recording surface of a magnetic disk in units of first memory areas in each of which a first volume of data can be written by an SMR method. The first scale corresponds to a sequence of the first sections. The controller provides a plurality of second sections with numerical information on a second scale. The plurality of second sections are obtained by dividing the recording surface of the magnetic disk in units of second memory areas in each of which the first volume of data can be written by a CMR method. The second scale corresponds to a sequence of the second sections. The controller executes a plurality of commands in order based on a numerical information on the first scale or the second scale.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a plurality of magnetic disks, a plurality of magnetic heads provided correspondingly to the plurality of magnetic disks and configured to carry out read/write of data from/to the magnetic disks, and a control section configured to control read/write of the magnetic heads. Each of the plurality of magnetic disks includes a first storage section storing therein control information concerning read/write of the magnetic head. According to one embodiment, a recording medium controller includes a recording medium, an input module, a reading module, and a writing module. The recording medium includes a write area and an escape area. The write area includes track groups. Each of the track groups is a unit for writing data and includes tracks. The input module receives a write command for data. The reading module reads data stored in the escape area and data from a first track group of the track groups. The writing module writes data received for the write command to the escape area, and writes merged data obtained by merging the data read from the escape area and the data read from the first track group to each track of a second track group of the track groups by using a shingle recording technique in which adjacent tracks are partly overlapped with each other.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a plurality of disks including a first area to which data is randomly written in normal recording and to which an LBA is added, and a second area to which data is written in shingled recording to write a plurality of tracks overlaid in a radial direction and to which an LBA is added, a plurality of heads, and a controller which writes data to the first area in the normal recording, writes data to the second area in the shingled recording, and changes the first area in accordance with a first recording capacity of a first recording surface in each of the disks, which corresponds to a first head of the heads, when the first head is inhibited from being used.

A disk storage apparatus according to one embodiment includes a head, a storage device, a write module and a controller. The head writes data on a disk. The storage device has a storage area for temporarily storing the data written by the head. The write module writes data to tracks on a disk, while partially overlapping the data with previously written data to adjacent track. The controller detects a drift-off write of the head while writing data, determines a drift-off write area in which the drift-off write is occurred, and protects the data written in the storage area, if the data is written in the drift-off write area.
