Disclosed is a side seam-coated welded can comprising a welded can body having a seam on the side face and a resin coating layer covering at least one surface side of the seam, wherein said coating layer comprises a thermosetting resin and a thermoplastic resin having a softening point of 50.degree. to 300.degree. C. as determined according to the ring and ball method, at a volume ratio ranging (A) from 95/5 to 25/75 or (B) from 20/80 to 1/99, and one of said two resins is present in the coating in the form of a continuous phase and at least a part of the other resin is present in the coating in the form of fine dispersed particles. This can is excellent in corrosion resistance and processability.

Side seam-coated welded cans and process for preparation thereof

Disclosed is a paint for a can which comprises an epoxy resin component formed by condensation of a dihydroxyl compound with an epihalohydrin and a curing agent component, said epoxy resin component containing terminal .alpha.-glycol groups at a concentration of 0.05 to 0.60 equivalent per Kg of the resin. This paint provides a coating capable of retaining a high adhesion even with the lapse of time and resisting a severe treatment such as retort sterilization. When this paint is applied to a bonded can, leakage of the content from the side seam with the lapse of time can be effectively prevented. When this paint is applied to a can provided with an easy-open can lid, occurrence of the enamel feather can be prevented at the time of opening the lid.

A bonded can having a high hot water resistance, which consists of a metal material having both the confronting side edges bonded together by a linear polyamide adhesive through an epoxy-phenolic resin undercoating composition, wherein said epoxy-phenolic resin undercoating composition comprises 50 to 95% by weight of an epoxy resin having a number average molecular weight of 800 to 5500, which is obtained by condensation of an epihalohydrin with bisphenol A, and 5 to 50% by weight of a resol-type phenol-aldehyde resin having a number average molecular weight of 200 to 1000, which is obtained by reacting a mixed phenol comprising 65 to 98% by weight of a dihydric phenol represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein R stands for a bridging group or is a direct bond, and 2 to 35% by weight of a monohydric phenol, with an aldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst. This bonded can can resist retort sterilization conducted at 122.degree. to 135.degree. C. without substantial reduction of the peel strength of the bonded portion.
