An image processing apparatus for obtaining image information by detecting, as an image signal, an electrical signal corresponding to a reflectance or transmittance of an original, including: an A/D converting circuit for converting an analog signal outputted from a photoelectric conversion element into an n-bit digital signal; and a shading correcting circuit for correcting an output characteristic of the photoelectric conversion element, high m bits of the n-bit digital signal being set as effective bits when white shading data is obtained, low m bits of the n-bit digital signal being set as effective bits when black shading data is obtained, bits being added as low bits to the m-bit white shading data, bits being added as high bits to the black shading data, shading calculation being performed. In the image processing apparatus, a capacity of a shading memory can be suppressed without reduction in quantifying resolution of the black shading data.

The main controller is configured to count an array attribute determined by an array of the color attributes for 32 lines in a block obtained by dividing a band including 64 lines in the color multi-valued image into eight in the main scanning direction, calculate image-characteristic parameters for the block based on the counted values, determine a block image attribute from the counted values and the calculated parameters, and determine the image attribute of the band based on the determination result.

Image processing apparatus and image processing method

An existing printer arranged to print data from a PC (personal computer) is used as the printer unit of a facsimile apparatus. The PC uses a printer driver dedicated to an existing printer (capable of performing the same processing as the printer unit of the facsimile apparatus) as a module, serving as application software for a facsimile-apparatus control unit, for printing the data from the PC. When printing data from the PC, a command uniquely directed to the facsimile apparatus is added to the printing data generated by the PC's printer driver, and the resultant data is transmitted to the facsimile apparatus. Upon receipt of the transmitted data, the facsimile apparatus removes the added command, thus restoring the printing data generated by the printer driver, and transmits the restored data to the printer unit to perform printing. It is thus possible to use the printer unit and the printer driver which utilize existing printers, and to cause the facsimile apparatus to wait in a state of receiving a common command system.

Each of pixels of recorded image is formed by a plurality of dots composed with ink droplets ejected from a plurality of different orifices at individual different main-scannings. With this recording process, the variation of ink ejection characteristics between a plurality of orifices in a recording head can be reduced in forming pixels.

After an ink-jet recording head with a plurality of discharging portions arranged is main-scanned in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the discharging portion arrangement to record a first image area, sub-scanning of the head is performed. Before the head is main-scanned to record a second image area, the sub-scanning is performed so that a few discharging portions on an upper edge portion of the head in second main-scanning overlap part of the first image area. Ink droplets land on pixels in the overlapping portion twice for each main-scanning, and image density of the pixels in the overlapping portion is controlled by the sum number of the landing ink droplets. This enables image density unevenness of image density, example, a 'black stripe (banding)' or a 'white stripe (banding)' in a boundary of an image area being recorded in each main-scanning, to be markedly reduced.
