In one embodiment, a dual-mode circular waveguide includes a cavity, a first end wall including a first handedness-preserving metasurface positioned at a first end of the cavity, and a second end wall including a second handedness-preserving metasurface positioned at a second end of the cavity.

Polarization standing wave cavity assisted by anisotropic structures

A vertical split ring resonator antenna is disclosed, comprising a substrate having an upper surface and lower surface, an interdigitated capacitor coupled to the upper surface of the substrate and ground coupled to the lower surface. The interdigitated capacitor includes a first planar segment and a second planar segment, each having interdigitated fingers that are separated by a gap disposed between the first planar segment and second planar segment. The interdigitated capacitor is coupled to the substrate to form a vertical split ring resonator.

Electrically small vertical split-ring resonator antennas

A compact multi-band hybrid ring (rat-race) coupler utilizing a ring of composite right-handed and left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines (TLs) and multiple ports, provides miniaturization and the ability to operate at arbitrary frequency bands unlike conventional couplers. The hybrid ring is made compact, such as by constraining phase delay contributions |&#x3c6;|, |&#x3c6;|&#x2266;270&#xb0;. The coupler can be used in many applications, for example as a mode decoupling network in a dual-band front-end MIMO system. The inclusion of a CRLH delay line is also described which alters the phase relationship of the signals and is particularly well suited for extending pattern diversity in response to frequency.

Compact dual-band metamaterial-based hybrid ring coupler

High-frequency couplers and coupling techniques are described utilizing artificial composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL). Three specific forms of couplers are described; (1) a coupled-line backward coupler is described with arbitrary tight/loose coupling and broad bandwidth; (2) a compact enhanced-bandwidth hybrid ring coupler is described with increased bandwidth and decreased size; and (3) a dual-band branch-line coupler that is not limited to a harmonic relation between the bands. These variations are preferably implemented in a microstrip fabrication process and may use lumped-element components. The couplers and coupling techniques are directed at increasing the utility while decreasing the size of high-frequency couplers, and are suitable for use with separate coupler or couplers integrated within integrated devices.

Composite right/left (CRLH) couplers

A diplexing apparatus and method which utilizes composite right/left-handed (CRLH) phase-advance/delay lines combined with a coupler. By engineering CRLH-based transmission lines with desired phase responses at two arbitrary frequencies of interest, the connected CRLH delay line and/or CRLH coupler are excited in a manner such that signals at designated frequencies are separated to the corresponding output ports of the hybrid coupler. Benefits of the apparatus include elimination of design complexities such as optimization of the interconnection junctions and the harmonic spurious suppression involved in conventional filter-based diplexers. In addition, channel isolation is beneficially achieved from the isolation property of directional couplers. Measured insertion loss on the implementations was found to be less than 1 dB, with isolation greater than 20 dB in the dual bands. A high level of agreement was observed between simulated and measured results.

Diplexer synthesis using composite right/left-handed phase-advance/delay lines

A dual-band resonator with compact size, such as a resonant type dual-band antenna, which uses an anisotropic metamaterial is described. The artificial anisotropic medium is implemented by employing a composite right/left-handed transmission line. The dispersion relation and the antenna physical size only depend on the composition of the unit cell and the number of cells used. By engineering the characteristics of the unit cells to be different in two orthogonal directions, the corresponding propagation constants can be controlled, thus enabling dual-band antenna resonances. In addition, the antenna dimensions can be markedly minimized by maximally reducing the unit cell size. A dual-band antenna is also described which is designed for operation at frequencies for PCS/Bluetooth applications, and which has a physical size of 1/18&#x3bb;&#xd7; 1/18&#x3bb;&#xd7; 1/19&#x3bb;, where &#x3bb;is the free space wavelength at 2.37 GHz.

Compact dual-band resonator using anisotropic metamaterial

Dual-band and multi-band radiating elements are described based on composite right/left-handed (CRLH) meta-material transmission line (TL). These elements can operate as resonators and/or antennas depending on feed-line configuration. The radiating elements are based on the fundamental backward wave supported by a composite right/left-handed (CRLH) meta-material transmission line (TL). Unit-cells of the transmission line comprise conductive patches coupled through vias to a ground plane. The physical size and operational frequencies of the radiating element is determined by the unit cell of the CRLH meta-material. This radiating element is configured for monopolar radiation at a first resonant frequency and patch-like radiation at a second resonant frequency. The first and second resonant frequencies are not constrained to a harmonic relationship.

Power combining methods and devices for tunnel diode oscillators using the infinite wavelength phenomenon observed in composite right/left-handed (CRLH) meta-material lines are described. One implementation utilizes a series combiner composed of zero degree lines, with each oscillator output port connected directly to the line and combined in-phase, to equally combine the power in phase. In a second implementation, a section of zero degree transmission line implements a stationary wave resonator with oscillators loosely coupled to the resonator, where the wave amplitude and phase are constant along the line. In one test of this second implementation a maximum power combining efficiency of 131% was obtained with the zeroorder resonator with two tunnel diodes oscillators at 2 GHz.

Power combiners using meta-material composite right/left hand transmission line at infinite wavelength frequency

An apparatus based on composite right-handed or left-handed (CRLH) principles to provide a transmission line or antenna structure having a plurality of cells to which one or more feed ports are attached. The apparatus is based on an equivalent circuit Right-Hand (RH) series induction (L) and shunt capacitor (C), and Left-Hand (LH) series capacitor (C) and induction (L), in which effective permittivity (e) and permeability (m) of the structure are manipulated by the choice of C, L, C, and L. One embodiment describes mushroom antenna cells (D orD array) in which vias extend up from a feed network on a ground plane through at least one dielectric region to each of a first plurality of conductive elements (plates or strips). Optionally, a second plurality of conductive elements are disposed between first and second dielectric layers to form metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors to lower resonance frequency.
