A desired picture or pattern such as a wiring pattern may be recorded on a recording surface bearing a photosensitive material coated thereon by sweeping a light beam obtained from a light beam source and then scanning, with the thus-swept light beam, the recording surface. A portion of the swept light beam is branched out by a half-mirror and then fed to optical sweep position detecting means. The light beam from the light beam source is modulated by a picture signal obtained in synchronization with a position signal produced by the detecting means on the basis of the thus-detected portion of the swept light beam in such a way that the thus-modulated light beam is continuously maintained, at least, at such a low light quantity level that is too small to expose the photosensitive material substantially. The method is useful for the fabrication of distortion-free printed circuits. Owing to the use of only one light beam, the method has cut the manufacturing cost of a picture recording system which is useful to practice the method.

An improved apparatus for measuring the printed area of a printing plate upon which a printing image is formed, of the type having a movable scanning head provided with longitudinally arranged light sources and plural photosensors arranged in parallel with the light sources. The improvement is composed of a proving sensor device separate from and movable independently of the scanning head which includes at least one light source and photosensor. The proving sensor device provides calibration data for correcting the measurements made by the scanning head. It does this by measuring the intensity of reflected light from a totally dark printing area and a non-printing area from anywhere on the printing plate, and a totally reflective surface and totally absorptive surface, which are preferably located apart from the printing plate. The improvement further includes control means for electronically processing the measurement data produced by both the scanning head and proving sensor device.

A method is disclosed of positioning an object photoelectrically, wherein two photoelectric detectors are placed contiguously, and then the object is moved over the detectors between them and light which is falling on them, said object being formed with a register mark on it which is of different translucency from the object, so that its passing affects the photoelectric detectors. The object is moved in a direction along a line, and when the ratio between the amounts of the register mark which cover each of the detectors (which is measured by measuring the outputs of the detectors) reaches a certain predetermined value, this movement is stopped. Several systems are also disclosed for positioning an object on a plane by using several such setups in different arrangements.

A method and machine for trying on a hair form in image, in which a hair pattern portion is deleted from a face shape to be fitted by a hair pattern, and the face shape with the hair pattern thereon is displayed. In the machine, the hair pattern and the face shape with a mask for masking the hair pattern portion on it are arranged optically in symmetrical positions with respect to a half-mirror, and the face shape with the hair pattern thereon is taken through the half-mirror by a video camera. In the method, the hair pattern and the face shape are taken by the camera to obtain first and second signals by which the face shape with the hair pattern thereon is formed and then is displayed.
