A novel polyethynylacetylene derivative represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R is H, (C1-7) alkyl, phenyl, benzyl, naphthyl, carbazole, (C2-7) vinyl-alkyl --CX.sub.1 X.sub.2 (OH) or --SiX.sub.1 X.sub.2 X.sub.3 in which X.sub.1, X.sub.2 and X.sub.3 are H, (C1-7) alkyl, phenyl or benzyl, with the proviso that the case where all of X.sub.1, X.sub.2 and X.sub.3 are H is excluded and x is a number of 20 to 500. The polyethynylacetylene derivative is prepared by polymerizing a monomer of the formula HC.tbd.C--C.tbd.CR wherein R is as defined above, with the proviso that the case where R is H is excluded, in the presence of a metathesis catalyst or a Ziegler catalyst. A polyethynylacetylene derivative of the above formula (wherein R=H) is prepared by reacting a polyethynylacetylene derivative of the above formula wherein R=Si(C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1).sub.3 with a desilylating agent. The polyethynylacetylene derivative is soluble in organic solvents and can be shaped into various articles. This polymer is used as a high-sensitivity pattern-forming material and is promising as a precursor for polyacene polymers.

A fluroinated graphite having the formula (C.sub.x F).sub.n wherein x is a numerical value of about 2.0 to about 5.5 and n refers to an indefinite number of the recurring (C.sub.x F) unit and having a crystalline structure exhibiting a peak at about 13.7.degree. to about 15.0.degree. in terms of an angle of 2.theta. corresponding to the diffraction at the (001) plane in the X-ray diffraction pattern, a peak in the vicinity of 685.3 eV due to the F.sub.ls and two peaks in the vicinity of 287.5 eV and 284.3 eV due to the C.sub.ls in the spectrum of electron spectroscopy of chemical analysis, two peaks in the vicinity of 1100 cm.sup.-1 and 1240 cm.sup.-1 in the IR spectrum, and an electric conductivity of at least about 10.sup.-8 .OMEGA..sup.-1 cm.sup.-1, and being thermlly stable in air up to 200.degree. C. from the viewpoint concerning a pattern of X-ray diffraction; and a process for producing the fluorinated graphite thereof which comprises subjecting a carbon material to electrolysis in hydrogen fluoride at a voltage of about 6.5V to about 15V at a temperature of about -40.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C. in the presence of an electrically conductive agent. The fluorinated graphite has a wide variety of uses, for example, as an active material for the positive electrode of an electric cell, lubricants, stain-resistant and water and/or oil repellent materials, etc.

A novel polyvinylene chalcogenide of the formula: --CH.dbd.CH--L).sub.n wherein L is S or Se, is provided. This compound is prepared by reacting an ethylene dihalide of the formula: XHC.dbd.CHX' (X and X' are selected from F, Cl, Br and I) with an alkali metal chalcogenide or bichalcogenide.

There is presented a photoelectrolyzer comprising a number of minute solar cell elements suspended in an electrolyte. Each element is made of, for example, a first thin film of intrinsic amorphous silicon having specific properties and/or N-type amorphous silicon and a second thin film of a P-type amorphous silicon. This apparatus is high in the sunlight collection efficiency and also is capable of electrolyzing an electrolyte with high electrolysis voltage such as water.

Photoelectrolyzer

A novel semiconductor device having an oxide semiconductor layer between an amorphous silicon hydride and a metallic layer has been found to have an excellent collection efficiency for light, particularly, in the range of short wavelengths and a high energy conversion efficiency as compared with the conventional Schottky barrier semiconductor device and the semiconductor device having a MIS structure. Further, it has been found that the present novel semiconductor device has an excellent storage stability for a long period of time.

An aluminum-halogen cell comprising aluminum as an anode active material and a halogen compound as a cathode active material characterized in that the layer containing the cathode active material further comprises at least one stabilizer selected from the group consisting of magnesium halides, zinc halides, organic carboxylic acids and their anhydrides, aluminum or more basic metallic salts of perhaloid acids and quaternary ammonium salts shows only slight lowering in output voltage at initial discharge when continuously discharged under a load and can give high discharge output for a remarkably long period of time.

A thin metal-halogen cell which comprises an electroconductive substrate, an anode active material layer of thin metal film formed on the base plate, a solid electrolyte layer formed on the anode active material, a cathode active material layer comprising a halogen, adhesive and carbonaceous powder, and an electroconductive plastic film, the latter two being laminated on the solid electrolyte layer in this order can be produced by using a step of forming thin films such as vacuum evaporation coating or sputtering and a step of laminating by using an adhesive. Thus, ultra-thin cells having high power and a thickness of 1 mm or less can be produced easily and inexpensively. When a separator and a barrier layer are sandwiched between the cathode active material layer and the solid electrolyte layer, shelf life of the cell is improved remarkably.

A dry image forming material comprising (a) a non-photosensitive organic silver salt oxidizing agent, (b) a reducing agent for a silver ion and (c) a halogen molecule, which material is excellent in that a high sensitivity can be obtained and the occurrence of fog is extremely small. The sensitivity can be further improved by incorporation of a halogen ion source in addition to the halogen molecule. Furthermore, the dry image forming material can be improved, with respect to light stability of the raw image forming material and stabilities to heat and humidity, by incorporation of a nickel compound and/or a cobalt compound. In the dry image forming material of this invention, further incorporation of a carboxylic acid anhydride exerts a remarkable anti-fogging effect. The dry image forming material of this invention is non-photosensitive under normal lighting conditions and therefore, can be prepared, handled and stored in a light room. An image can be easily, simply formed only by preliminary heating, light exposure and heat development of the image forming material.

A pattern of a character, numeral or symbol on an optical mask is selected in accordance with the designation by a character designator and irradiated with light from a printing light source. The light is converted into a light of the pattern of the designated character, numeral or symbol by a optical mask, the pattern being of a size ranging from about 20 to about 500 .mu.m, and the converted light reaches a thin layer of a dispersion imaging material formed on a recording medium to cause at least dispersion of the thin layer, thereby to print the pattern of the designated character, numeral or symbol. A recording medium support and the position of irradiation of the recording medium with the converted light are moved by a drive relative to each other, so that characters, numerals and symbols can be printed on the recording medium one by one. The characters, numerals and symbols printed on the recording medium in the region including the recording medium irradiating position are optically displayed by a projector during the printing operation.
