A method of recording information relating to an image photographed on a photographic film in which the photographic film comprises a magnetic track associated with each image frame for magnetically recording the information. Each magnetic track has two or more fields. The information is divided into sections which are each recorded onto any of the fields together with a start signal, an end signal, and an error detection and/or correction signal for each the information section. Consequently, even if the information to be recorded for each image frame is interrupted due to an error in the conveying speed of the film, a portion of the information can be read and utilized.

The perpendicular magnetic orientation of a magnetic layer containing platelet-form ferromagnetic particles coated on a web support is effectively performed by passing a web having thereon the coated magnetic layer in an undried state through a magnetic field formed by plural pairs of opposite pole type magnets disposed in the travelling direction of the web with a gap between adjacent pairs of magnets, while supplying drying air through each gap onto the surface of the travelling web to substantially complete the drying of the coated layer while the web is in the magnetic field. A partition may be inserted in each gap so that the lower end of the partition is close to the upper surface of the travelling web to divide the gap into a front section and a back section, and the drying air may be passed through these sections.

In a magnetic recording medium comprising a non-magnetic support and a magnetic recording layer coated thereon in which ferromagnetic particles are dispersed in a binder, the ferromagnetic particles are given a magnetic anisotropy by a magnetic annealing treatment and the direction of the magnetic anisotropy is vertical mainly to the recording surface. Cobalt-free ferromagnetic particles are disclosed. The particles are comprised of ferromagnetic metal inner cores and an outer oxidized layer. The particles have a saturation magnetization of 60 to 100 emu/g and a coercive force of 500 Oe or more. The outer layer provides a means for stabilizing the magnetic characteristics of the particles at temperatures not higher than 80.degree. C. in air. The particles are produced by gradually oxidizing ferromagnetic metal particles containing no cobalt in oxygen-containing gas such that the surface-oxidized metal particles have a saturation magnetization of 60 to 100 emu/g. The particles provided have good magnetic characteristics which are maintained with the passage of time even when the particles are subjected to adverse temperature and humidity conditions.

A magnetic recording medium having a thin ferromagnetic metal film formed on a non-magnetic base by vacuum vapor deposition or ion plating is disclosed. The thin ferromagnetic metal film is based on Co and contains 0.05 to 3.0 wt % of Mg.

A magnetic recording medium comprising a substrate, a thin magnetic metal film having spaced-apart columnar grains deposited on the substrate, and an organic polymer formed in the space between the columnar grains and integrated therewith. The medium is prepared by impregnating the spaces between the columnar grains with organic monomers or oligomers and polymerizing them in the spaces.

Weather resistance and lubricity of a magnetic recording medium comprising a non-magnetic support having provided thereon a vapor deposited magnetic thin film mainly composed of cobalt, nickel and oxygen can be improved by limiting the amount of nickel and the number of oxygen atoms to a specific value and by providing a plasma polymerized layer on the magnetic thin film.

A process for preparing cobalt-modified ferromagnetic iron oxide by modifying ferromagnetic .gamma.-Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 particles with cobalt, wherein prior to cobalt modification treatment, the ferromagnetic .gamma.-Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 is heat treated at a temperature in the range of from about -200.degree. C. to +30.degree. C. of the critical temperature at which partial transition of .gamma.-Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 into .alpha.-Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 occurs and which reduces the saturation magnetization to 99% of the saturation magnetization measured before the heat treatment, and the atomic ratio of Fe.sup.++ /Fe.sup.+++ after the cobalt modification is 0.00 to 0.10.
