User equipment in close proximity may transfer data and control information. For example, the user equipment may exchange data or data sets between each other. Each user equipment can receive and transmit data using radio access technologies. A group of user equipments may include active user equipment and passive user equipment. Active user equipment connects with one or more base stations and transfers data on a wireless communication network via the base station. The active user equipment may communicate with other active user equipment and passive user equipment. Passive user equipment may not connect to any base station and/or the wireless communication network and may communicate with other passive user equipment and active user equipment (e.g., via a sidelink, peer-to-peer, or device-to-device channel).

Disclosed are methods, systems, and computer-readable medium to perform operations for selective re-transmission of radio link channel (RLC) service data units (SDUs). In one aspect, the method can include actions of determining that transmission of an RLC SDU having a first sequence number was not successful, determining whether to re-transmit the RLC SDU, and based on a determination that the particular RLC SDU is not to be re-transmitted: moving a start location of an RLC transmission window to an RLC SDU that (i) has a sequence number that is greater than the first sequence number and (ii) has not been acknowledged, and transmitting a transmission to another device that indicates that the RLC SDU having the first sequence number is to be skipped.

Methods, apparatuses, systems, and computer programs for ciphering information in a physical layer of a wireless communications network are disclosed. In one aspect, a method can include obtaining, by a UE, a transport block for transmission using the physical layer, determining, by the UE, whether the size of the transport block satisfies a predetermined threshold, and based on a determination, by the UE, that the size of the transport block satisfies a predetermined threshold size: ciphering, by the UE, the entire transport block, and transmitting, by the UE and to an access node, the ciphered transport block using the physical layer.

Cooperative communication for user equipment groups

A base station may operate in a context where the propagation delay between the base station and user equipment (UE) devices is large. The base station configures UE devices with a common delay. The base station receives a random access preamble from a UE device. The base station determines a time slot in which the random access preamble was transmitted, based on a configured correspondence between allowable time slots and subsets of an available set of preambles. The base station computes a Random Access Radio Network Temporary Identifier (RA-RNTI) based on parameter values including an index, of the determined time slot. The base station employs the computed RA-RNTI to address a random access response for the UE device.

A user equipment device (UE) may communicate according to a new device category satisfying specified QoS (quality of service) requirements while also satisfying specified link budget requirements, and additional optimization requirements. The UE may use physical channels and procedures (e.g. it may receive and decode control channels) in a manner compatible with and not infringing on the operation of other UEs operating in the same network, while allowing the network more flexibility to assign resources. Specifically, resources for EPDCCH on UE-specific SS and EPDCCH on common SS may be shared. That is, the resources for two search spaces may be overlaid partially or in full, giving the network more flexibility in allocating resources. Furthermore the DCI formats for MPDCCH may be extended to devices operating according to the new device category, which enables the coverage enhancement of MTC for these devices.

Control channel design for category-A devices

A user equipment (UE) device may communicate according to a new device category satisfying specified QoS (quality of service) requirements while also satisfying specified link budget requirements, and/or additional optimization requirements. The UE device may communicate with a cellular base station according to a first mode of operation associated with the new device category, and may switch to communicating with the cellular base station according to a second mode of operation associated with a second (pre-existing) device category in response to the link budget requirements exceeding a specified value and the quality of service requirements not being sensitive. The UE device may also switch to communicating with the cellular base station according to a third mode of operation associated with a third (pre-existing) device type in response to the link budget requirement not exceeding the specified value, or the QoS requirements being sensitive and a downlink throughput requirement exceeding a specified throughput value.

This disclosure relates to techniques for reducing latency in a high-propagation-delay wireless communication system. A user equipment device (UE) may transmit to abase station (BS) a first buffer status report (BSR) indicating an amount of uplink data buffered by the UE for transmission to the BS, and may subsequently transmit to the BS a first BSR update message indicating that an additional amount of uplink data has been buffered by the UE subsequent to transmission of the first BSR. The first BSR update message may be transmitted prior to expiration of a timer authorizing transmission of a second BSR following the first BSR. The UE may receive from the BS an uplink grant allocating resources for transmission of at least a portion of the uplink data buffered by the UE. The uplink grant may have a size based on the first BSR and the first BSR update message.

User equipment (UE) supplemental BSR for reduced latency in high-propagation-delay networks

A user equipment (UE) device may perform random access to a base station in the context where propagation delay between the base station and the UE device is large. The UE device randomly selects a random access preamble from an available set of preambles. The UE device selects a time slot for transmission of the random access preamble based on a configured correspondence between allowable time slots and subsets of the available set. The UE device transmits the random access preamble to a base station in the selected time slot, with timing advance to compensate for a common delay. Thus, the base station, knowing the configured correspondence, is able to determine the time slot in which the random access preamble was transmitted. The UE device receives a random access response that has been addressed with a Random Access Radio Network Temporary Identifier (RA-RNTI).
