A method for thermally insulating a power cable or other temperature sensitive equipment from a wellbore tool comprising a heater. The wellbore tool is deployed at an end of the power cable in a well. A flow restrictor is deployed in an annular space between the heater and a wellbore tubular. The heater is axially spaced apart from the power cable such that the heater is disposed on one side of the flow restrictor and a connection to the power cable is disposed on another side of the flow restrictor. A thermal insulator is introduced into the annular space on the one side of the flow restrictor and the heater is operated.

Heat transfer prevention method for wellbore heating system

A method for modifying an element on a section of wellbore tubular includes positioning a wellbore intervention tool at a first location on the tubular, operating a penetration device to remove the element and create an orifice on the section of wellbore tubular, and operating an installation device to install a replacement element in the orifice.

Method for modifying installed wellbore flow control devices

An apparatus is for controlling a fluid flow. The apparatus has a valve provided with a valve adjuster for controlling a fluid flow through the valve. The valve has a fluid inlet in fluid communication with a fluid inlet conduit, and a fluid outlet in fluid communication with a fluid outlet conduit, for flowing fluid through the valve. The apparatus further has an actuator device capable of undergoing a change in shape, the change in shape of the actuator device providing via a connecting member an attenuated or amplified displacement of a fixation point connected to the valve adjuster, when compared to the change in shape of the actuator device.

Apparatus for controlling a fluid flow

A method for operating a pressure operated device in a wellbore includes conducting pressurized gas to a power fluid inlet port of a valve at a first pressure. The first pressure is selected to cause a shuttle in the valve to be positioned to enable flow of the pressurized gas through the valve to a power fluid flow port in communication with a power fluid inlet of the pneumatic device. Pressure of the pressurized gas is increased to a second pressure greater than the first pressure, whereby the shuttle moves to close the power fluid inlet port to flow and to vent the power fluid flow port to ambient pressure in the wellbore.

Energy saving downhole and subsea valve

A wellbore intervention tool includes a housing and a means for locking the housing at a selected position inside a first wellbore pipe. The tool includes means for penetrating the first wellbore pipe extensible from the housing. The means for penetrating includes means for measuring an amount of extension thereof or an amount of force exerted thereby such that the means for penetrating is controllable to penetrate the first wellbore pipe without penetration of a second wellbore pipe in which the first wellbore pipe is nested.

A wellbore intervention tool for use in penetrating an obstruction in a wellbore includes a cutting tool having at least one rotating cutter member for penetrating the obstruction. A displacement mechanism coupled to the cutting tool sets and adjusts a cutting position of the cutting tool relative to a tool axis. A sweeper coupled to the displacement mechanism deflects the displacement mechanism about the tool axis, and the cutting tool is deflected with the displacement mechanism.

Wellbore intervention tool for penetrating obstructions in a wellbore

Methods for sealing a wellbore include placing a barrier material within an annular space between a wellbore tubing and a wellbore casing, wherein a seal is placed across or below openings in the wellbore tubing at at least one location above a lowermost tubing to annulus opening. In some embodiments, an intervention tubing may be used to insert the barrier material into successively exposed ones of the annulus openings, whereby no seal sleeve is needed.

Methods for placing a barrier material in a wellbore to permanently leave tubing in casing for permanent wellbore abandonment

Signal communications at a drilling system generally includes communicating upwards or downwards from the rig floor. For example, signal communications upwards may comprise the control of a cementing head operation (e.g., actuating cementing head). Signal communications downwards may comprise the activation of tools and their confirmation (e.g., hole opening tools, liner hangers, and packers). Actuation may be performed via umbilicals, for example, via pressure spikes or the dropping of balls, darts, or radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags. However, issues may arise wherein, for example, a ball may not properly land to close a circulation valve. As another example, a cementing head could be over 100 feet above the rig floor, which may make it difficult for signal communications via an umbilical. Accordingly, what is needed are techniques and apparatus for activation of tools and their confirmation by a remote communication system.

Method of incorporating remote communication with oilfield tubular handling apparatus

Apparatus and corresponding method for remotely communicating with a device in a wellbore, comprising: an oilfield tubular handling apparatus (); partial toroidal coil sections () integrated with the oilfield tubular handling apparatus, wherein the partial toroidal coil sections form a toroidal coil upon a tubular member () with the handling apparatus; and a microcontroller for communicating with the device via at least one of signals transmitted or received through the tubular member using the toroidal coil.

Disclosed herein is a temporary well isolation device, which is sealingly disposable in downhole tubing, and which has a housing with an axial passage. The temporary well isolation device also has frangible barrier element within the housing, where the frangible barrier element is sealingly engaged in the passage blocking fluid flow through the passage. The frangible barrier element bears a load from fluid pressure. The temporary well isolation device also has a disengageable constraint in contact with a frangible barrier element so as to redirect the load on the frangible barrier element from a first component of the load to a second component of the load, thereby preventing rupture of the frangible barrier element. Also disclosed herein is a method for disintegrating a frangible barrier element disposed in a passage of a temporary well isolation device.

Method for disintegrating a barrier in a well isolation device

Disclosed herein is a temporary well isolation device, which is sealingly disposable in downhole tubing, and which has a housing with an axial passage. The temporary well isolation device also has frangible barrier element within the housing, where the frangible barrier element is sealingly engaged in the passage blocking fluid flow through the passage. The frangible barrier element bears a load from fluid pressure. Temporary well zone isolation

The present invention is a packer for sealing an annular region in a wellbore. The packer includes a packing element which is held through bidirectional forces. The packer first comprises an inner mandrel. Disposed around the inner mandrel are three tubulars: (1) a top sleeve; (2) a bottom sleeve; and (3) a booster sleeve. A packing element is disposed circumferentially around the outer surface of the booster sleeve. The top sleeve and bottom sleeve each include an upper compression member which rides across the booster sleeve in order to compress the packing element. The packing element is expanded outward from the packer to engage a surrounding string of casing through compressive forces provided by the top and bottom sleeves. Thereafter, differential pressure applied above or below the packer acting on the packer element and booster sleeve may provide additional compression of the packer element.

Bi-directionally boosting and internal pressure trapping packing element system

A packer, and operation of the same, which forms elastomeric seals and non-elastomeric seals. The packer may be constructed from a non-elastomeric tubular core having a frustoconical shaped inner diameter. The outer diameter of the core may be substantially smooth and carry one or more elastomeric sealing elements. The packer is set by causing the diametrical expansion of the tubular core. The construction of the tubular core is preferably such that its diametrical expansion causes the formation of radial raised portions (upsets) on the outer surface. These raised portions form the non-elastomeric seals and also prevent extrusion of the elastomeric sealing elements.

Apparatus and method for controlling pressure surges in a wellbore. One embodiment provides a downhole surge control tool equipped with a fluid motivator. The fluid motivator may be, for example, any type of motor or a venturi. The fluid motivator motivates wellbore fluid through a bypass channel formed in the tool and then out an exhaust port of the tool.
