A method for improving the heat sealability of a packaging material and a method for manufacturing a heat-sealed container or package are described. The material can be polymer-coated packaging paper or cardboard, or a polymeric packaging film. The material includes a polymer layer that contains polyester, particularly polylactide, the heat sealability of which is improved by ultraviolet radiation. Polylactide is useful as such or when blended, for example, with other biodegradable polyester. The containers and packages thus manufactured include disposable drinking cups and cardboard carton and box packages.

Biobased p-cymene and methods of producing same, which can further be converted to terephtalate. Further, a method is described for converting crude sulfate turpentine recovered from chemical wood pulping into p-cymene and eventually to terephtalic acid of biological origin, and products thereof respectively. In said method, both conversion and desulfurization is realized in one reaction step. The disclosure is also related to use of zeolite catalysts in said method.

Catalytic refining of terpenes of pulp origin

A polymer-coated oven board includes a coating that contains an oxygen barrier layer of polyamide (PA) and a surface layer of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) adhered to the oxygen barrier layer. These layers are produced onto the board by co-extrusion without a binding agent layer between them. The weight of the PA oxygen barrier layer is 3-15 g/m, and the weight of the PET surface layer is 20-50 g/m. An oxygen impermeable food package heatable in an oven includes the oven board wherein the superimposed polyamide and PET layers are located inside the board layer in the package. The oven board may also include a PET surface layer on the opposite side of the board. Polyamide has been selected so that it withstands heat sealing and the heating of the package in an oven.

A heat-sealable biodegradable packaging material, its manufacturing method and a product package formed thereof, where the packaging material comprises a fiber substrate, an inner polymeric coating layer against the fiber substrate, which contains polylactide and a biodegradable polyester that is blended therewith to improve the adhesion between the inner coating layer and the fiber substrate, and an outer coating layer that constitutes the outer surface of the material and contains polylactide and a biodegradable polyester that is blended therewith to improve the heat sealing ability of the layer, the portion of polylactide in the inner layer present in an amount greater than that in the outer layer. The inner and/or outer coating layers can further have blended therewith a small amount of acrylic copolymer that improves the adhesion and/or heat sealing ability. The coating layers can be introduced onto the fiber substrate by extrusion or coextrusion.

Heat-sealable biodegradable packaging material, a method for its manufacture, and a product package made from the material

The invention relates to a method of treating chemical pulp fibers by a polymerizing hydroxy acid, the fibers thus obtained and the products refined from them. In the method, the hydroxy acid reacts with the reactive groups of the fibers in the presence of a catalyst, forming ester bonds. The following units of the same hydroxy acid are oligomerized and/or polymerized to these grafted acid residues. The fibers thus treated and the products refined thereof endure better processing stages that include drawing and stretching than untreated fibers.

The invention relates to a method of producing olefinic monomers for the production of a polymer. The invention particularly relates to the production of tall oil-based biopolymers, such as polyolefins. In the stages of the method The deoxygenation in the bed can be followed by a catalytic cracking or, with a suitable catalyst, the deoxygenation and cracking can be simultaneous. The separated hydrogen-bearing gas phase can be circulated in the process.

Method for producing olefinic monomers from bio oil

A method of manufacturing aromatic hydrocarbons, which are suitable for the production of terephthalic acid, from tall oil-based raw material. According to the invention, the raw material that contains tall oil or its fraction is catalytically deoxygenated with hydrogen, and one or more aromatic hydrocarbons that can be converted into terephthalic acid are separated from the deoxygenated reaction yield. The deoxygenation catalyst is a NiMo catalyst and, in addition, a cracking catalyst can be used, such as an acidic zeolite catalyst. The separated hydrocarbon can be p-xylene, o-xylene or p-cymene. According to the invention, these can be converted by oxidation and, when needed, by a re-arrangement reaction into terephthalic acid that is suitable for the source material of the manufacture of bio-based polyethylene terephthalate.

Hydrogen treatment of impure tall oil for the production of aromatic monomers

A cardboard cover that seals a package and that also enables the resealing of the package. The lower surface of the cover () is provided with a downwards directed annular profile () made of an injection mouldable material, which enables the resealing of the cover and is placed inside the package when the package is sealed. The invention also relates to a package which is sealed by using the above-described cardboard cover that enables resealing. The object of the invention is a liquid packaging board (), wherein the base board () is provided with at least one polymeric coating layer on both sides thereof to decrease the flavor scalping from a packaged liquid, such as citrus fruit juice. Inside the baseboard, there is a layer () of ethylene methyl acrylate copolymer either in a direct contact with the packaged liquid or coated with a thin layer of polyolefin. The invention also relates to a closed package for liquid food that is formed from the liquid packaging board () by folding and seaming, wherein the side that comes in contact with the food product, correspondingly, comprises an EMA layer and, possibly, a thin polyolefin layer on top of the same. The invention further comprises the use of EMA in decreasing the flavor scalping from the packaged liquid by the packaging material.

The invention relates to a polymer-coated Polymer-coated heat-sealable packaging material, heat-sterilized package formed from the material, and use of the packaging material. The material comprises a fiber base(e.g., packaging board made of bleached pulp) with polymer heat-seal layerslocated on both sides thereof. The package comprises, outside the fiber base, first polymer coating layer, which contains white pigment for covering the fiber base from sight, and second coating layer, which contains light-absorbing pigment. A coating layer pigmented grey inside the fiber base may provide a light shield for the packaged product. Absorbent black pigment may be located outside the fiber base underneath the white layer to stabilize the brightness of the material. A heat-sterilized package is made by providing the packaging material, forming a package containing, e.g., food, and heat-sterilizing the package in an autoclave. Yellowing of the fiber-based material is avoided by means of a white pigment.

The invention relates to a method for protecting the untrimmed edge of paperboard or paper (), in which method the untrimmed edge () of two adjacent paperboards or papers are protected and attached abuttingly together by sealing a separate profile () on both sides of the abutment of the edges () by means of ultrasound.

The invention relates to a method for priming a substrate by contacting the substrate with a primer fed from a primer source and depositing the primer on the substrate. Compared to other priming methods, the claimed priming gives better results because the deposition is carried out electrostatically.

Priming and coating process

The invention relates to a heat-sealable packaging material and a sealed package formed from the same, especially for packaging foodstuffs. The packaging material comprises a base layer of paper or board and polymeric heat-sealable layers on one side of the base layer or, preferably, on both sides thereof. According to the invention, at least two layers of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) with different fractions of ethylene monomer are arranged on the packaging material to provide an oxygen barrier. The layers can locate against each other without a tie layer between them. The heat-sealable polymer can be a polyolefin, and, in addition, other polymeric barrier layers can be incorporated into the material to improve its oxygen, fat and aroma tightness.

Polymer-coated heat-sealable packaging material and a sealed package manufactured thereof

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing board (), a board provided by the method, and a container formed from the same, such as a disposable drinking cup. According to the invention, fiber-based stock is doped with a polymer (), ending in a pulp web that is formed of this pulp on a board machine wire, and in a board layer () that is obtained from the same by pressing and drying. When the board layer is heated, the polymer melts and water vapor bubbles penetrate it, rendering the layer porous. The polymer used for the doping can comprise, for example, a low density polyethylene (LDPE) that has a melt viscosity of about 15. Pore-generating heating can be carried out for the board or only for the container manufactured from it. The porous layer prevents the hot drink enjoyed from the cup from burning the fingers of the user.
